My dog's ear is red and waxy, but he's not bothered. Vet or wait?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | unneutered | 10 months and 9 days old | 75 lbs

Hi! I noticed a couple days ago that one of Kobe’s ears is noticeably redder than the other. There was also more wax in that ear than the other (which I have since cleaned). He doesn’t shake his ears or seems to have any changes in behavior. Should I have him come in to be seen by a vet or wait it out a few more days? Thank you!

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach!

Kobe likely has and ear infection. Since he is comfortable I think it is fine to wait until next week to have an appointment. You can use a good ear cleaner and flush out that affected ear every other day until the appointment. The Vet usually uses a Q-tip to remove wax to look at it under the microscope. Most ear infections are causes by yeast and/or bacteria. If he has an infection they will prescribe drops.

I hope this helps and I wish Kobe the very best~
