My dog has red urine. Are there home remedies if I can't afford a vet?

She could be suffering from a UTI or bladder stones causing the bloody urine and trouble controlling her bladder, and the medications needed to treat either are available by prescription only from the vet. The best thing to do for a suspected urinary tract infection is to have Twinkles see her veterinarian for a urine test to confirm the infection and antibiotics. There are no home treatments or over the counter medications or supplements that can help treat a urinary tract infection. A supplement that can help prevent future urinary tract infections, however, is a cranberry extract supplement called Crananidin that you can purchase OTC at your local pet supplies store. It is possible that she has a UTI that is not responding to the particular antibiotics that your veterinarian initially prescribed, which can be a problem especially in older pets. Your veterinarian should perform a urinalysis and a urine culture and susceptibility (if they haven't already) to see if there is an infection present and to what particular antibiotics it is susceptible. Another possible cause of Gracie's signs could be urinary bladder stones, which can cause irritation of the bladder, leading to frequent urinations that are often red-tinged. Most bladder stones are visible on abdominal x-rays, which may be recommended by your veterinarian. Other stones require an abdominal ultrasound to see. An abdominal ultrasound would also be able to detect any other abnormalities in the bladder, for example, a tumor. I recommend ensuring she has plenty of access to water, and having her seen by your veterinarian at their next available appointment. I hope this is helpful!

I am afraid there are no homeopathic remedies for a UTI with frank blood in the urine. As a matter of fact, she could have a serious kidney infection, polyps or a bladder tumor as well. Before treatment comes diagnosis and you really need to take her to your veterinarian for an exam, urinalysis and diagnosis. Depending on the diagnosis your veterinarian will treat her with the appropriate medications.

Unfortunately not as urinary tract infections must be confirmed by your local veterinarian. Stress related (idiopathic type of inflammation) infection and presence of crystals are the most common causes of it. Antibiotics may be needed. She likely has a urinary tract infection or possibly bladder stones. If you can't get her in any sooner than Monday and can't call them to ask for advice or to move up the appointment and she still seems otherwise okay, get her seen Monday. If she does start feeling sick or has trouble urinating, take her to an emergency clinic, just understand that at any vet right now the wait may be long unless she is an emergency and in very bad shape. I don't know of any products you can buy over the counter that will help, and using OTC products could actually mask symptoms that could help lead to a faster diagnosis when she does get to her appointment.
