My dog has a red swollen eye circle not clearing up. What is it?

It sounds like this might be due to an allergy or autoimmune problem given the response to corticosteroids. Sometimes the lymph tissue associated with the third eyelid can become enlarged and I’m wondering if that is the case with the right eye, but it’s difficult to say without being able to examine in person. If the symptoms are not resolving with treatment you may want to ask your vet about referral to an ophthalmologist.

It looks like an infection around the eyelid. This can happen if the eye has been excessively moist lately. The other common cause of this hair loss around the eye is a mite known as Demodex. This is normally seen in puppies. Sport looks like he's a senior, so it's less likely, but still possible. The cause of the swelling can usually be identified by a veterinarian. They can look for the mite and treat for infection. The vet will also be able to give medication that will take down the swelling, which is much needed now. For now, it's best if you can flush the area with saline. You can find this at the local pharmacy or supermarket in the eye care section. Flush for 15 seconds twice a day. This will give some relief and help to treat/prevent infection. I recommend taking Sport to the vet within the next few days to keep this from getting worse.

It's a little difficult to tell exactly what might be red and swollen in your picture. It looks like the redness and swelling may be around the eye as opposed to actual eye itself. If this is the case, an allergic reaction or eyelid infection would be two of the more common causes. If it is the white of his eye that looks swollen conjunctivitis, a corneal abrasion, or inflammation in the eye would all be possibilities. If the swelling worsens or if you notice swelling around the other eye or the muzzle I'd recommend seeing a veterinarian as soon as you can since this would increase the concern for an allergic reaction which should be treated promptly. Otherwise I think you're okay to wait to see your regular veterinarian if the swelling is still present in the morning, unless he seems painful or begins squinting.

Hello, Soffie has hair loss around her eye but I cannot visualize the eye itself. The hair loss may be secondary to mites. In order to find out. Soffie needs to have her skin scraped and her eye examined. You will need to follow up with a veterinarian to have this performed. Please apply an E-collar to prevent her from scratching more.

That looks like chemosis - swelling of the conjunctiva. The underlying cause, I don't know. All the things I can think of that can cause chemosis should easily resolve with topical steroids. Since it is not resolving, then yes, I think a consult with a veterinary ophthalmologist would be necessary at this point. Best wishes.

Hello. I am sorry for your concerns about Lilly. There are possibly 2 reasons for recurrent skin irritation, allergies, or the presence of a skin mite. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian who will do a simple skin scrape of the skin & look for the presence of the mite under a microscope. Depending on what is, or is not found, your veterinarian may try a steroid medication, either as an injection or a pill, & possibly use a flea & tick medication called Bravecto, that also has activity against the skin mites. There are a number of possibilities but hypersensitivity to bacteria in the skin is a common cause of what appears to be hives. Your vet can prescribe antiinflammatory tablets and drops containing antiinflammatories if this is the case. Referral to an opthalmologist and sampling of the area could also be considered.
