Why is my dog's eye swollen, hard, and losing pigment after vet visit?

It looks like an infection around the eyelid. This can happen if the eye has been excessively moist lately. The other common cause of this hair loss around the eye is a mite known as Demodex. This is normally seen in puppies. Sport looks like he's a senior, so it's less likely, but still possible. The cause of the swelling can usually be identified by a veterinarian. They can look for the mite and treat for infection. The vet will also be able to give medication that will take down the swelling, which is much needed now. For now, it's best if you can flush the area with saline. You can find this at the local pharmacy or supermarket in the eye care section. Flush for 15 seconds twice a day. This will give some relief and help to treat/prevent infection. I recommend taking Sport to the vet within the next few days to keep this from getting worse.

It's a little difficult to tell exactly what might be red and swollen in your picture. It looks like the redness and swelling may be around the eye as opposed to actual eye itself. If this is the case, an allergic reaction or eyelid infection would be two of the more common causes. If it is the white of his eye that looks swollen conjunctivitis, a corneal abrasion, or inflammation in the eye would all be possibilities. If the swelling worsens or if you notice swelling around the other eye or the muzzle I'd recommend seeing a veterinarian as soon as you can since this would increase the concern for an allergic reaction which should be treated promptly. Otherwise I think you're okay to wait to see your regular veterinarian if the swelling is still present in the morning, unless he seems painful or begins squinting.

This looks like a swelling of Poppy's conjunctiva as opposed to the eye itself. It could be due to an allergic reaction or infection such as conjunctivitis. She will need eye drops and antinflammatories to settle this down so go to your vet as soon as you can. In the mean time pressing a cooled tea bag on the outside of the eye can provide some relief.

Hello, Soffie has hair loss around her eye but I cannot visualize the eye itself. The hair loss may be secondary to mites. In order to find out. Soffie needs to have her skin scraped and her eye examined. You will need to follow up with a veterinarian to have this performed. Please apply an E-collar to prevent her from scratching more.

Poor Alpha! The most common reasons for swollen eyes are bee strings/bug bites or an allergic reaction (of which you generally never know the cause). Trauma or something stuck in the eye could also cause swelling in the area. Carefully check the area for any stingers or marks. You can apply a cold (not cold) compress to the area. Unfortunately, unless you find a stinger, you won't know the cause. You must also protect the area from rubbing with an elizabethan collar since rubbing could make it worse. I recommend to play it safe and have Alpha examined by the veterinarian today. The doctor will check the eye as well as look for clues as to the cause. If an allergic reaction is suspected, he will likely receive an injectable antihistamine and possible a steroid or anti-inflammatory. Just like with humans, some pets may experience an anaphylactic reaction. Monitor your dog for signs of an allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing, general weakness or a progression of swelling. If you see any of those signs this could indicate a serious anaphylactic reaction and you need to take him into the vet immediately. He can have a possible infection or conjunctivitis since it is affected both eyes. Since the discharge is getting worse and he does not want to open his eyes, it is best he sees a vet to determine if there is a scratch on the cornea or just an infection. There is topical antibiotics +/- a steroid to help clear them. The only thing you can do at home is rinse with sterile eye wash and try to apply a warm compress to help with the swelling.

There could be an eye infection or trauma to the eye and the skin may habe an infection or some other skin condition. Any time I am dealing with an eye, I usually recommend having a veterinarian examine this to ensure there is nothing serious going on, especially if you are unable to get a good look at the eye itself. I would recommend having your vet check this out just to be on the safe side. For the skin, I would recommend starting a shampoo such as Douxo PS calm shampoo and bathe twice weekly until resolved.
