My dog gets red spots after walks. Are they allergies or bites?

It sounds like something irritated his skin. Do some investigating and see if you can part his hair away and look at his skin for more clues. IF you don't see any irritation, then the culprit was probably not severe enough to cause harm to the skin. You can then try bathing him in an aloe-based or oatmeal-based shampoo to see if this can help calm his skin down and then monitor him for the next few hours for improvement. If hsi irriation worsens or does not resolve, then it is best to get Bix evaluated by your vet for further treatment. Humans inhale environmental allergens such as grasses, weeds, pollens and molds. This results in watery eyes and a runny nose. Dogs can experience this, but they walk through and lay in the grass. Therefore, red and possibly itchy skin tends to occur on the belly and paws. Dog can also develop red spots from insect bites. Rarely a bleeding disorder can occur. In this case, small area of bruising are seen on the dog. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian. He will be examined and detailed questions asked regarding his lifestyle and diet. Testing may be recommended. Based on these results treatment can be started if necessary. If he is acting ill or the spots look like bruising (your pictures are a but blurry), then he needs to see an emergency veterinarian today. I hope this information helps!

Hello, sorry to hear about Ginsber. It looks like he could have allergies. This is particularly suspicious because majority of the spots are on his legs which may be exposer to grasses and other environmental allergens. However, the other potential cause for this could be flea bites and flea allergy dermatitis. Please make sure that Ginsber has adequate flea control year round. You can also wipe him down with skin sensitive baby wipes each day after coming in from being outdoors to decrease his allergen exposure. If he is scratching and licking, he may need allergy medications which can be prescribed by your veterinarian. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Poor Dewey! I'm so sorry to hear of his skin troubles. Dewey could be dealing with a number of potential problems. It is difficult to tell from your photo, but it is possible that Dewey is having a reaction to some sort of biting fly or similar. You could try an over the counter topical parasite preventative that targets biting flying insects and see if this helps. The lesions may have become infected, contributing to the scabbed appearance. Patchy hairloss and lesions like this can also indicate a problem called demodex-caused by tiny mites that live in the skin. These tiny bugs can only be treated with certain medications, and can cause ongoing skin problems if not addressed. I would recommend having Dewey checked over by your regular veterinarian-they will perform a thorough physical examination, and may recommend some skin tests such as a skin scrape, which can give better insight into the cause of Deweys problem. Your vet will then prescribe medications as appropriate-he may be prescribed antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, medicated shampoo. It sounds like Biscuit could have a flea allergy, or possibly environmental allergies. The picture of his paws does look inflamed. He may need to see a vet for systemic medications such as antibiotics or an anti-itch medication if it's not getting better on its own. Make sure he is on a good flea preventive so that he is not getting bitten over and over again.

Those spots on Basil could be several things including allergies to fleas, allergies to something in the environment, food allergy or endocrine disease. Each one of these problems is detected and addressed differently and I recommend to discuss with your veterinarian which one to start hunting down first. Parasites are often ruled out with a oral medication like Simparica. Food allergy is best ruled out with a diet trial using a hydrolyzed protein. Endocrine diseases are detected with blood work. Environmental allergies are a little more difficult to detect but a response to therapy or a blood test can give an indication. Once you figure out and address the underlying cause, the lesions should not come back. There are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they are unlikely to address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing his diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. Also protect the area from trauma by having Basil wear an elizabethan collar at all times.
