My dog had fleas, now has red spots and bites paws. Could it be flea allergy?

It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Hello, sorry to hear about Ginsber. It looks like he could have allergies. This is particularly suspicious because majority of the spots are on his legs which may be exposer to grasses and other environmental allergens. However, the other potential cause for this could be flea bites and flea allergy dermatitis. Please make sure that Ginsber has adequate flea control year round. You can also wipe him down with skin sensitive baby wipes each day after coming in from being outdoors to decrease his allergen exposure. This is likely to be due to an infective pododermatitis. It is possible that the generalized infection is actually due to an underlying predisposing allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). It sounds liek Andy may have food allergies causing the pink paws, but it is impossible to know what the butt area could indicate without a picture of this. Allergies in pets are treated with alelrgy medication prescribed by your vet or sometimes over the counter anti-histamines can help alleviate itching and redness. You can also try a hot spot spray over the counter at your local pet store to treat any localized areas of irritation for now to see if that resolves the problem. The pictures are difficult to see, but it appears that Cookie may have an infection on her skin. It may be caused by bacteria and could be secondary to scratching, fleas, or an allergy. I would get her on a good flea preventive if she's not on one already, but I think she may need to see a veterinarian as these infections sometimes need antibiotics to clear up.

This definitely looks like dermatiits. Also it would not have resolved so quickly if it were bites. The dermatitis is likely a hypersensitivity to something in the environment. Unfortunately a lot of dogs are allergic to things like grass, pollen and molds in the grass, which can cause outbreaks of the skin in this manner. There are some options for management of environmental alleriges in dogs that you can discuss with your vet if O's skin has another outbreak.
