My dog has smooth red spots on her tummy. Is it a rash or allergy?

First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Poor Nala! There are a number of things that could cause red spots on her stomach. If they are very small and look like pimples all over her belly, this is a common sign of a bacterial skin infection called pyoderma. If it's more of a flat, red rash, this is more likely to be an allergic reaction or an area of irritated skin, which could be due to sitting in urine if she does this for long periods. I would recommend having her examined by a vet when you can, to determine what is causing the spots - she may need prescription antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medication to treat the problem, depending on the diagnosis.

It could be a local bacterial infection, fungal infection or inflammation. You would need to have Lily physically examined by your veterinarian for a definitive diagnosis and for treatment. If she is licking at it, place an e-collar (cone) on her. Keep the area clean and dry until she sees the vet.

Advantage) as fleas are by far the most common reason for these reactions. It certainly isn't normal to have a rash on the belly, and it could be caused by a contact allergy, ringworm, or a skin infection. The vet can diagnose what is causing the rash so it can be treated.
