My dog has a red spot on his chest with hair loss. Is it a hot spot?

The region shown in the picture is consistent with a hotspot. Hot spots occur when an animal scratches or choose at an until damage is done to the skin. They can often progressbvery quickly and become quite severe if not treated. If the area is continuing to enlarge or if Garret seems uncomfortable I would recommend that you have him seen by your veterinarian. Your veterinarian may clip and clean the area and prescribe medications to help it heal. In the meantime I would recommend that you try to prevent Garret from scratching at the area. You can put a t-shirt on him to protect that area.

I would stop apply hydrogen peroxide to this spot on Bruce. It actually damages tissues and prevents healing, and is not a good thing to continually apply to the skin. I would just leave it be for now and have a vet examine it on Tuesday.

Poor girl. She has a skin infection caused by some sort of trauma to her skin. You can try shaving around the area and then cleaning it with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water followed by a topical hot spot spray from your local pet store. If after a few days things haven’t improved, then it’s best to get Jake seen by your vet for stronger pet formulated antibiotics to get this to heal. Best wishes with Jake and his hot spot. Thank you for using PetCoach. I'm sorry Deuce is having problems. From the looks of this picture, this is not likely to heal without oral and topical medications. The sooner he sees a vet the more more likely it will resolve quickly. These skin infections are often painful and tend to have fungal and bacterial populations. In the meantime keep it dry. Please don't use any alcohol or vinegar based treatments as these are very painful. A shampoo with Chlorhexidine may be helpful if used daily, but make sure to completely dry him after washing. If this is on his neck, remove (and disinfect) any collars or harnesses that may rub him. Don't put back on until completely healed. I completely understand that skin issues can be expensive, expecially in a larger dog, but in the long run a vet visit early in the course of illness tends to be cheaper than home remedies and a visit later. In general, a sensitive skin diet tends to help lessen the number of flare ups. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Ninja! I can not see the skin well in the pictures due to all the hair. I am not seeing an open wound but more of a sore. If the area is flat, red, moist and weeping it is likely a hot spot. Hot spots are superficial skin infections that occur secondary to allergies, scratching and excessively moist fur (like after a bath or swimming). They crop up very quickly and get larger just as quick. I treat hot spots by shaving all the fur away, having owners use an E-collar or T-shirt to prevent further scratching and I prescribe a course of oral antibiotics and tapering course of steroids along with a topical spray. Most hot spots with this treatment heal with in 5 days. I would make an appointment with your Vet. I wish you the best!

This looks like an area of moist dermatitis, or hot spot. They get these from licking or rubbing an area of skin that was irritated from an insect bite, allergy or injury. To treat this I recommend trimming the fur around the area, then cleaning off the discharge with warm water and antibacterial soap. Once it’s rinsed and dried you can apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it. The most important thing is to prevent her from scratching or rubbing this area so it can heal. Use a cone if needed. If it’s not improving then I recommend a veterinary exam and treatment. They may give medication to prevent the itching, and possible a topical spray or ointment to dry up the skin. Hot spots are common in Goldens so I’d have a cone and medication on hand to treat these at home before they get bad.
