My puppy has a growing red spot and hair loss on her hip. What is it?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 5 months and 11 days old | 41 lbs

Hi! I have a 6 mo old puppy named petra that I adopted about 2 months and a half ago, her health has been fine but she has a spot on her back right hip that lost it's hair (alopecia?), I thought it was a bug bite at first, and she doesn't itch and scratch it too much, but It's got slightly bigger lately. The skin is just a little bit raw and red, not too bad, but should I be worried or is this normal? She is a pointer/lab (probably pit) mix.

Petra is very cute! I would recommend taking her to a vet for a skin scrape. This will make sure she does not have skin mites like demodex. IT is possible a small allergy, fungal disease, skin infection or even vasculitis from a rabies vaccine cause the hair loss. However due to breed I would make sure she does not have skin mites.
