My dog has a red lump with black dots. Is it a cyst or wart?

Hello there and thank you for your post! From the pictures you have posted, it the red blood blister like mass you are seeing is most likely what we call a hemangioma, which is typically benign. However, hemangiomas can turn into hemangiosarcomas that are cancerous. I would recommend having this removed if possible to prevent this from progressing. If Gizmo does not do well at the vet, you can ask if they can provide you with an anti-anxiety medication / sedative to administer prior to an appointment to get this looked at. I hope this helps! Hi there! From the photo the mass does appear to be a benign papilloma (wart). That being said, it is not easy to tell 100% from a photo. I would still recommend you take Jack to your vet for an exam just to be on the safe side. I do not think it's an emergency situation. While you are waiting to take him in for his exam be sure to monitor the mass closely for any drastic changes in shape or size. I hope this helps. Best wishes.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Thank you for the picture, that is more helpful. The lump doesn't look infected or like a wound, however these are still possible. The lump looks like it could be a bit of a blocked gland, a cyst, an abnormal wart, or a tumor is always possible as well as some tumors, especially Mast Cell tumors, can look like anything. I would recommend monitoring it for now, if it is bleeding, growing (or growing and shrinking), bothering Bogart (he is chewing/scratching at it), or if there is any discharge, then I would get it checked right away. Otherwise, I would wait a few weeks and see if it goes away on it's own. If it doesn't go away in a few weeks, then I would recommend having it removed by your vet and sent away for histopathology. Your vet might do an "FNA" (fine needle aspirate) prior to removing it to determine what it is. Best of luck with Bogart!

Thanks for sending the picture! It appears to be a wart like growth with a small scab on top. These are common in small breed dogs. If it grows or changes rapidly, then I would still have her veterinarian check it out. Otherwise I do not suspect it will be a problem for her. You can try to clean the scab off for her. Good luck!

The photo is a little fuzzy so its hard to say. It may be an oral papilloma, which is due to canine papillomavirus. Typically these resolve on their own, but many more may pop up over the next few weeks on his lips and in his mouth. It could also be an inflamed hair follicle or a skin infection. If its not resolving over the next few days to weeks, or if it seems to be getting worse or causing him discomfort, please take him to your vet to be evaluated.
