Worried about a lump on my dog? Could it be a tumor or a cyst?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The photo is taken very far away which makes it difficult to tell what is going on here even with zooming in a bit. This could be a tumor but it could also be a cyst or an abscess. It is best to take Cornelia to your vet so they can do an in-person examination. They will be able to advise you better as to what it may be. Something like this is extremely difficult to "diagnose" via a photo. It really needs to be seen and felt in person. Hope this helps. Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Is that supposed to be the same growth in both photos? The growth if the first photo looks suspicious for a malignant tumor. The tissue around the mass is swollen and the mass itself is raised and ulcerated; both can be signs of a malignancy. I cannot tell you for sure though just by looking at a photo. The second photo looks like a benign wart. In general, any new lumps/bumps should be examined by your vet. The first photo looks worrisome and I think you should have it checked in the next few days.

This is a tumor. It's hard for me to tell the location on the dog from the photo. If it's growing quickly then it's more likely malignant and could spread to other parts of the body. If it's been there a long time then it's more likely benign. At the base it looks inflamed and may open up and drain. That would be messy and make it more likely to get a bad infection. If your dog is healthy even at age 13 I would have this removed, and they can biopsy it to determine the type of tumor. Hello. This looks like a possible infected hair follicle of sebaceous gland infection. It is probably not dangerous, especially since your dog is still quite young. I would gently clean the area with something like Hibiclens ( available at all pharmacies ) & if it seems to be getting worse, bothering your dog, or begins to ooze, please see your vet as soon as possible. My hunch tells me it is likely a sebaceous gland cyst (benign tumor); however, it is always best to get masses tested through your vet to be sure. Masses like this are often removed during another surgical procedure, such as a teeth cleaning. I am sorry to hear about Bobo. Unfortunately your photo is a little blurry and so I am not able to identify the area you are concerned about. Possible causes for a circular/round swelling could include a tumor (we can have benign tumors that don't cause issues and can be monitored and malignant tumors which behave aggressively and require surgical removal) or a stye or pocket of infection. I would recommend an examination by your dog's vet to look at the area of concern. If they feel it is a stye/infection they may prescribe an antibiotic. If they feel it is a tumor they may recommend removal or regular monitoring.

If you have not had a veterinarian take a look at this, I would recommend doing so and having some testing done to help identify what this could potentially be. The veterinarian can start by inserting a small needle into the mass and try and get a good sample of cells to look at under the microscope. The most definitive way of telling what this mass could be is to send out a tissue sample of the mass. If it is causing discomfort, I would have it removed and send it out to find out what it could be. If it is an abscess, it likely needs to be drained and then Diamond will likely need to be on a course of antibiotic therapy. Again, I would have a veterinarian take a look at this so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction!
