My dog has red, flaky skin and chews. Can I use coconut oil?

This itching can be caused by fleas, mites, ringworm, or allergies. Coconut oil will not help with these causes. If Patton isn't up to date on his flea treatment, he will need a spot on treatment such as Advantage or Revolution. You will need to disinfect the environment as well. If he is up to date on his flea treatment, I recommend taking him into the vet for an exam today or tomorrow. The vet can do blood tests, skin scrapings, and use a Wood's lamp to diagnose allergies, mites, and ringworm. Once the cause of the itching is found, the vet can prescribe the appropriate treatment.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach! In my experience, I've not seen coconut oil do much to relieve inflammation and allergies. I would instead recommend that you use a shampoo such as Douxo PS calm shampoo and bathe twice weekly. You can find this shampoo easily online. I would also recommend using welactin omega 3 fish oil and essential 6 spot on by dermoscent. Malacetic conditioning spray can also be used and applied to the affected area 2 to 3 times per day until resolved. All of the above recommended products can be found online. If this does not help then I would consider prescription medications such as Apoquel or Cytopoint, both of which are prescription drugs that will need to be prescribed by Sherry's veterinarian.

I don't think coconut oil and vinegar will be helpful. I suggest you use this medicated spray on the affected areas once per day. You can try a fish oil supplement, such as EicosaCaps or DermCaps. They may be more effective than coconut or EVOO. Use a humidifier in your home if you live in an arid climate. Lastly, have Damien physically examined by your veterinarian to diagnose any underlying medical causes. Certain endocrine disorders can lead to skin issues as can infection (bacterial, fungal or parasites).

For a dog Jett's size I would add 1/4 tsp to the food. Also, I personally like to use the Krillex Shed Free chews for dandruff and shedding, so if the salmon oil does not work, I would use the Krill oil chews. You can find these online quite easily. You can rub a tiny dab of organic coconut oil on the lesion (wear gloves in case it's ringworm) onto the lesion twice a day. Coconut oil can condition the skin and has antimicrobial properties. If the lesion is still present in 1 week or if it starts looking worse, have her examined by the veterinarian. I hope this helps.

Yes, dogs love the taste of coconut oil, and will often lick any topical medications off - either because they enjoy the taste or because they are still itchy underneath the topical medication. I would recommend a soothing shampoo to calm down the razor burn or itch, I like Dechra DermaLyte Shampoo. You can also add fish oils to her food to help with itching. You may ask your groomer what kind of shampoo or products they put on Keira, because she may be allergic to it. If she is still itchy in a few days, she may need to see a vet, sometimes razor burn can cause a mild skin infection and she would benefit from prescription antibiotics and anti-inflammatories.
