Why are my Maltese Poodle's gums, ears, and belly skin red?

Oh no. Poor Sawyer. Yes this is considered to potentially be an emergency situation. These red blotchy areas are called petechiae and this could indicate a spontaneous bleeding disorder or platelet malfunction. I would recommend taking Sawyer in to an ER vet to have blood testing done and appropriate treatment depending on blood analysis findings. Hopefully this is just a platelet abnormality and can be treated with steroids and antibiotics. Poor Guy! He could have an allergic dermatitis and a skin infection. He definitely needs to be examined and treated by a vet. If your vet is not able to manage the condition then you could take him to a veterinary dermatologist. I am not sure what medications he has been prescribed in the past, but it looks like he needs an antibiotic and an anti-inflammatory. You could also talk to you vet about trying a new allergy medication called Apoquel or Cytopoint to see if that helps, too. Your vet could also do a skin scrape and/or biopsy of his skin to help rule out other potential causes. Hope he gets some relief soon!

This area does look very red and inflamed - a common reason for such symptoms in an otherwise healthy dog is a food intolerance/adverse food reaction to something he is eating (possibly one of the meat sources). If he is in pain - a pelvic xray to rule out obstruction or growths may be considered also

Poor Max! He could have an infection, clotting problem, or possibly an autoimmune disease. It is concerning that he is hardly moving and I think it would be best if he was examined by a vet to determine the cause of problem and treat. I don't think there is anything that you can do at home without veterinary care to diagnose the problem. Your vet can run lab-work, if needed, to help diagnose and then prescribe medications to treat. Hope he feels better soon!

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. There seems to be two different types of 'spots' on Baxter. The pinky raised ones look like an allergic reaction, and the type that is usually caused by a bug bite. This would also make his ears swell and maybe his face including his muzzle/jowels and around his eyes. This will go away with time, and you can give him Benedryl as well, at a dose of 2mg/kg (which is about 50mg for a dog of Baxter's size). Please make sure the only active ingredient is Diphenhydramine, and that you don't get a 'non-drowsy' version as these have other drugs that are VERY toxic to dogs . The other spots that are only on his left side, under his left arm and down his left side, look like bruising on the picture, and more of a scratch, almost like road rash. If this is new as well then I would recommend getting Baxter seen right away, especially if he has no history of a big trauma. The bruising is especially worrying if he hasn't had a big hit/accident, as it is worrying for a clotting disorder. Best of luck with Baxter.

The photos are pretty blurry/pixelated so it's difficult to tell. Maximus Oakley could have a mild skin infection, or be developing allergies. I recommend having your vet take a look to determine what's going on. If he's developing an infection your vet can determine if he's likely to improve with something topical (such as a medicated shampoo) or needs a course of oral medication. If they suspect he's developing allergies, they can discuss the various intervention options, such as a monthly injection (Cytopoint) or daily pill (Apoquel).

It is a little unusual to see gum bleeding secondary to allergies in a dog. Gingivitis most often occurs from infection beneath the gumline and a dental cleaning is probably needed, although bleeding gums can occasionally also be a sign of a clotting disorder. The red, inflamed paws sounds more like a seasonal allergy to me, and there is thought that dogs may absorb allergens through their paws when they're outside. If the steroids are finished, you may need to recheck with your vet to discuss a more long term plan for the allergy. Sometimes there is a secondary infection present that needs to be treated, and sometimes a long term allergy medication like Apoquel or Cytopoint or even allergy testing is recommended.
