My dog has a red, crusty spot on its neck, looks embedded. What is it?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Staffordshire Terrier | Female | spayed

Just found this on my dogs neck. Red and crusty around it. Almost looks like it goes under the skin. I have no idea what it is.

That looks like it could be some sort of parasite larva or a tick. Certain types of flies will lay the eggs on the skin and the larva can migrate into the skin. Ticks are usually dark colored but variations can occur.
Regardless, I recommend to have Luna visit her veterinarian today. Larva tends to be fragile and you don’t want it to tear and leave a pice if it’s body in the skin. Ticks are easier to remove but sometimes the heads will tear off and remain embedded in the skin. The veterinarian will palpate the area and should be able to get a good idea of what exactly is going on.
I hope this is helpful and best of luck! Please feel free to post any additional questions.
