My dog has a red, circular wound on her leg with fur loss. What is it?

It's possible that Feli has been licking or scratching this area, causing these abrasions. This type of lesion can develop pretty quickly - even overnight. Some of the most common causes of itching include allergies and fleas. Make sure that she's regularly receiving a good quality flea preventive (Bravecto, Nexgard, Credelio and Simparica are all great prescription options, and K9 Advantix II is available over the counter). You can also give her a bath in a gentle oatmeal or baby shampoo in case there are any lingering allergens on her coat causing irritation. You certainly don't need to rush her to a vet for these lesions alone, but if they get worse or spread, then you should take her to get checked out. When dogs scratch, they can damage the protective skin barrier, which can make them susceptible to developing skin infections. I hope that she's on the mend soon!

If it is the black dog with white legs with a large red lesion on his right rear leg, it looks like he has had a serious injury (not disease) where he either had a large laceration/cut and the skin edges are widely separated now or he had a large section of skin ripped away as can happen if he was perhaps hit by a car or had some other traumatic event. Under ideal circumstances, he would be sedated for the wound to be cleaned and flushed out and given an injection of a long acting antibiotic, pain meds and the lesion/leg would be bandaged for it to heal by second intention unless up close it looks like the skin edges can be debrided and sutured back together. I don’t see red skin all over though, if you have pictures showing the red skin better in other areas of the body other than the right rear leg that would help! Thank you!

Hello, it looks from the picture like an area of hair loss and inflammation of the skin, but not an actual open wound. I would be concerned that she either got a hot spot, or something spilled on her, or potentially being road rash. It could also be infection either with parasites, bacteria, or ringworm. I would have Masa evaluated by your veterinarian if it is not getting any better in a few days or if she is scratching a lot or if the area of hair loss is getting bigger. In the mean time, you can clean it with soap and warm water then make sure to dry it thoroughly. If She is scratching at the area, you can place a shirt over her to protect the area. This could also be just a focal skin bacterial infection or secondary to an injury that has not healed, among other possibilities. You can use an e-collar to try to prevent further self trauma. I recommend that you have Tink evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and treat accordingly. Ringworm can be transmitted to humans so just in case this is what is going with Tink, wear gloves when handling this lesion. Good luck and best wishes!
