My dog's scratch became a big wound. What is it and is it serious?

Hello i have a dog,a boston terrier,2 days ago it wondered out of the house and came back with a scratch,today on the scratched spot there is a big wound and im not sure what could have caused it and is it dangerous

Hello, it looks from the picture like an area of hair loss and inflammation of the skin, but not an actual open wound. I would be concerned that she either got a hot spot, or something spilled on her, or potentially being road rash. It could also be infection either with parasites, bacteria, or ringworm. I would have Masa evaluated by your veterinarian if it is not getting any better in a few days or if she is scratching a lot or if the area of hair loss is getting bigger. In the mean time, you can clean it with soap and warm water then make sure to dry it thoroughly. If She is scratching at the area, you can place a shirt over her to protect the area. Hello. The infected paw could be due to any number of reasons (grass seed, ingrown nail, trauma, etc). The bumpy rash could be due to pyoderma (skin infection), food allergies, environmental allergies, fleas, etc. If she has scabs on her back I would be concerned about pyoderma or fleas. Your vet will look at her and be able to tell you by looking at her what the most likely causes are. They may need to do a skin scraping, or a test of her skin, or may be able to try with some medications. Either way, it sounds like you are right in taking her to see a vet today. These look unusual - I think these could potentially be hot spots or areas of superficial skin infection. Some fungal infections can also look similar. I would recommend making an appointment to see your vet in person. While you're waiting for your appointment it might be a good idea to put an e-collar on her to prevent her from licking and scratching.

Hello, and thanks for your question about Maki. This could have been a hot spot, but it could also be something else, such as an abscess (deeper infection), skin mites, etc. I'm a bit unclear as to if that first picture was an earlier picture, and the second one is how the area looks now? The two photos are very different - the area looks much smaller and more moist in the first photo. However, I'm concerned about the size of that bald patch in the second picture, and the fact that the fur still looks wet - which would indicate to me that the underlying issue is not yet cured. I recommend having Maki seen by a vet, where they can better look at those lesions, and start him on oral antibiotics if that's indicated. Hope this helps!

My dog has a strange spot under her arm after grooming. What is it?

Poor Masha! This looks like a relatively minor skin wound, from what I can tell in the photos. It's possible that her skin may have been accidentally nicked or caught in the clippers during her haircut yesterday - it's very easy for this to happen in small dogs with delicate skin. She also could have scraped or poked herself on something, or this could be a local inflammatory reaction to some type of insect bite. If this is the only spot like this you can see and she is acting normal otherwise, you could opt to monitor it for the next few days to see if it heals up on its own. You could also use a topical antibiotic spray such as Vetericyn or Nutri-Vet on the area as well, if you wish. If it does not seem to be healing within 5-7 days, or if the area around the wound becomes red and swollen, then it would be best to have her seen by a vet - in that case, she would likely need prescription antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication to treat the problem.

The photo didn't come through. If the scratch is on the skin it should heal on its own. Make sure it is clean and that your dog doesn't lick it. If the eye is scratched and your dog has squinting and eye discharge then I would take it to the veterinarian for treatment. Why is my dog's head scab getting bigger from constant scratching?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This looks like a hot spot. This is basically a bacterial infection secondary to self-trauma such as scratching. This is possibly secondary to allergies or another cause resulting in itchiness. I recommend that you have Bella evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. If confirmed a hot spot on examination, then they would start her on antibiotics and something like steroids to decrease the itch. In the meantime, you can use an e-collar which you may get from your local pet store to try to prevent further scratching. Good luck and have a good night!

Why is my dog bothering a new circular hair loss spot on his side?

i am sorry to hear about your dog! It is very difficult to evaluate the skin by a photograph but it appears there is a defect/wound in the skin here? I would be concerned that this was an abscess that ruptures, a wound that isn't healing and is infected, or we could have something like a cuterebra (a fly larvae that lives in a hole in the skin- look closely and see if you see a tiny creature moving inside the hole!). I would recommend a visit to your vet- the area may need to be flushed/cleaned and have antibiotics prescribed. In the meantime, I would put an e-collar on your dog or a t-shirt if it would be covered by this to prevent your dog from licking/aggravating the skin. You can also clean the area with a mild soap or Hibiclens (available at the drug store) and apply an antibiotic ointment like polysporin to the area until your vet can see him.

Thank you for showing concern and compassion for this little guy. The wound appears to be most likely caused by chronic fleas, bacterial infection (hot spot), or mite infestation. It could have also been caused by an injury or burn - a little difficult to tell with just a photo. Your vet should be able to help you figure it out. In the meantime, try to keep him from scratching the area and keep it as clean as possible.
