My dog has a red bump on his nose. Is it a bug bite or something else?

This looks like a mild skin infection or irritation from an insect bite or injury. You can wash it with antibacterial soap, rinse it well and then apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it. As long as there are no other spots this should heal fine. The overlying skin may come off and then the pinker skin may be showing until the fur grows back in which could take a month or so. This looks like she had an infected area under the skin (an abscess) that has ruptured to the surface. That is good as the infection will drain. A couple of things come to mind as possibilities. This could be an acute hypersensitivity reaction to something - bug bite/sting, perhaps - or possibility a severe bacterial infection called furunculosis. There are also some immune-mediated/auto-immune diseases that attack the top of the nose. See your vet about this. An appropriate treatment plan might be to start antibiotics and if no improvement after 2 weeks consider a biopsy to obtain a definitive diagnosis.

Yes, small bumps that are red and itchy could be associated with mosquito bites, although, I would expect them to be distributed throughout the rest of his body and not just his nose. Contact allergies with wither (carpet, toys, clothing, grasses) may also cause local skin allergies. And finally, skin infections on his nose and muzzle may cause this as well. You may wipe his nose with a skin sensitive bay wipe that does not contain fragrances to see if this decreases the bumps. If he is itchy, or if the bumps are getting worse, then he should be evaluated by a veterinarian to make sure he does not have a local infection. Hope this helps and best of luck.

While this may be caused by a bite from another dog, from my experience, this looks a little bit more like a wound from nudging something constantly with the nose. Perhaps nudging a door to a crate, or sticking his nose under a door repeatedly. I recommend keeping a close eye on the area, and maybe even getting Bear an E-collar or "cone" so that he does not cause further trauma to the area. I advise against applying antibiotic ointments such as Neosporin as Bear is likely to lick them off quickly. I hope this helps and that all is well with Bear!
