My dog has a red, blister-like sore on her foot. What should I do?

I would recommend a plastic cone to go around Kali's head to prevent her from licking / chewing at the sore. She will likely need an ointment more effective than neosporin. I would recommend buying a plastic cone at the pet store and using an ointment such as Zymox topica ointment. If the sore worsens I would then schedule an examination with your veterinarian so that the most appropriate treatment recommendations can be made. The vet can prescribe a better ointment than neosporin to help prevent infection and relieve any inflammation. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. What toy are describing could be a sore from a puncture secondary to a thorn or something sharp, a bug bite or ingrown hair. I would recommend applying a topical medication such as zymox topical ointment and apply to the area until resolved. Ouch! Poor Lola! First thing you need to do is prevent her from licking it. If she continues to lick it will only get worse. You can place a cone collar on her to prevent this. Since it is bleeding and oozing a fluid, I am really concerned it is infected or something might be stuck in there. I would have your vet take a look at it. Your vet can properly clip and clean it and start her on the proper medicine to help her heal. They can even take an X-ray if needed. I hope this helps and she starts to feel better soon.

They often develop these types of lesions due to an infection under the skin. In this location, I would be suspicious of something like a thorn stuck under the skin. However, it's possible that this is a tumor, or cyst. Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done for this at home. A vet will need to inspect and explore this lesion in order to determine the cause and provide the correct treatment. This may require minor surgery. For now, it may be helpful to soak the foot a warm water bath with epsom salts for 15 minutes twice a day. Be careful not to let Dexter drink any water with epsom salts, because this can cause vomiting and diarrhea. I hope that helps and Dexter gets better soon.

Kona needs to be examined by the veterinarian. Nonhealing wounds are concerning for cancer or an autoimmune condition. Sometimes the vet will recommend a biopsy right away to get a diagnosis. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Poor Kong. This could be an infected area that Kong has been licking, a growth, or it could be where a small foreign object has gotten under his skin like a grass awn. First, you don’t want him to lick it so you can put a cone collar on him if needed to prevent this. You can try putting neosporin on it twice a day but chances are he may need oral antibiotics. You can also give him Benadryl. See link below. If it isn’t healing or gets worse, I would have your vet take a look at him.
