My Boston Terrier has recurring diarrhea. Can I give her Immodium?

Pet's info: Dog | Boston Terrier | Female | spayed | 11 years and 6 months old | 16 lbs

11 yo Boston havingn second recurrence this month of diarrhea lasting several days. Vet did antibiotics and probiotic and bland diet etc. cleared up. Now recurred. Can I give her a half dose of inmodum as I've read is sometimes offered for dogs? Her urine output is normal and she's acting herself. Not in any meds now. Healthy usually.

She is so cute! I would try another round of the bland diet and probiotic. You may need to talk to your vet about possible intestinal parasites or her diet causing the diarrhea. They may want to check a stool sample or do a diet trial. Kisses to Lucy!

I am so sorry to hear that Lucy is experiencing these issues, I am sure it is very upsetting for you both, especially as this is her second occurrence of such an episode this month. Unfortunately I would not advise giving any over the counter medications to Lucy as it could upset her intestines further, as human medications are different doses and strengths then dog medications.

I would start her on the bland diet again now. Boneless boiled chicken breast and steamed white rice. I would also ensure she is not getting into anything she shouldn't, such as trash can raiding or table scraps. Boiled sweet potato with skin removed can also be helpful in cases of diarrhoea. Provide plenty of fresh water to keep her hydrated.

If the diarrhoea continues for more then a couple of days, she begins to vomit, you notice any blood, she becomes lethargic or depressed then I would take her into the vet. There could be an underlaying medical cause to the dirrahoea, such as IBD, parasite infections, pancreatitis, metabolic diseases or even some cancers. It could also be that the antibiotic used was not effective against the specific bacteria causing the problem and Lucy may need a new antibiotic.

Imodium can safely be tried only if a bacterial and parasitic infection has been ruled out or treated for simultaneously. It is possible they are all having an adverse reaction to the dewormer you used. In which case getting them with an antibiotic and probiotic would benefit them more than just the Imodium. I would consider taking 1 puppy out of the litter to the vet to get them tested for any remaining intestinal parasites, and then the recommended treatment above should be considered. In the meantime I would recommend feeding them all a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese to help settle their stomachs. Also over the counter probiotic Culturelle can be started to see if this makes a difference with their stools. Best wishes Witt your pups and I hope you get their loose stool resolved soon. My dog has diarrhea. Is it safe to give him Pepto or Imodium?

Unfortunately it's illegal for us to recommend using any OTC drugs in dogs without see them in person. I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps Brutus. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck.

I would avoid loperamide hydrochloride at this point especially if she is vomiting. withhold food for 12 hours then offer Sadie boiled boneless chicken and rice every 6 hours in small portions. if she is eating and not vomiting, continue with this diet for 2 days. After 2 days, you can put her back gradually on her normal food. If she continues vomiting or is not eating, take her to the vet to get treatment.

My dog's diarrhea worsened on meds. Can I give Loperamide or Flagyl?

It would be best to consult with your veterinarian before changing treatment or giving other medications. Legally, we are prohibited from recommending medications or dosing information in the absence of a physical exam and a patient-veterinarian-client relationship. You can try withholding food for 24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or an unflavored electrolyte replacement beverage. Resume feeding a bland diet in small frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. Transition slowly to the regular diet afterwards. A stool sample should be submitted to diagnose intestinal parasites or bacterial overgrowth. A veterinary probiotic such as Prostora, FortiFlora or ProViable may promote gut health.

I would recommend feeding small bland meals frequently with an added probiotic such as fortiflora. If diarrhea is mild it is often preferred to allow it to be expelled naturally if drinking and alert. Imodium is generally used alongside other treatment or where no signs of infection are identified
