My dog ate raw meat, has diarrhea, and won't eat. What should I do?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Nala! The crying is normal for an 8 week old puppy in a new home. The vomiting and diarrhea is not normal and is not anxiety. Possible causes of vomiting and diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral (especially parvo) or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion, reaction to new food/treats or a food allergy. Nala is very young and small. Not eating well combined with vomiting and diarrhea predisposes her to dehydration and low blood sugar risks. I highly recommend having her seen today and bring a stool sample. Also bring any paper work indicating recent vaccinations and dewormings. I wish you and Nala the best!

Diarrhea lasting longer than 24-48 hours may cause dehydration and other problems so it is a good idea to have Nala seen soon. You can consider making her a bland diet of boiled chicken and sweet potato or rice (with added water) to see if this helps, but it sounds like Nala may need some medication to help her feel better.

Poor Meeka! The diarrhea could be due to many conditions including eating something she shouldn’t have, bacterial over growth, parasites, the raw diet or even organ disease. Since the diarrhea has continued beyond 24 hours, I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian. With continued diarrhea, there are often bacterial shifts in the gut that will make matters worse regardless of the initial cause. Make sure to bring in a sample of fresh stool. The doctor will check her for parasites and bacterial over growth. Many times a bland diet can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normal food can be done. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. The diet should be AAFCO certified. Make sure to alert the veterinarian about the diet change. Any immunocompromised people in the clinic need to be cautious (just in case). Poor girl. Dolly sounds like she has a severe illness going on. She could potentially even have pancreatitis, which is inflammation of the pancreas that is more common in smaller breed dogs. I would highly recommend getting her seen by your vet asap for a pancreatitis test and bloodwork to get an overall health assessment so that we know what medication she needs specifically to get her feeling better. When pets are ill, it is almost impossible to force them to eat, especially if they are nauseous, so it's imperative to get her seen right away. If you are not able to get her in today, then you can offer her some boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese, but it is best to get her seen quickly so that her condition doesn't get any worse. It sounds as Nami is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking her to the vet the first chance you get, she will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection she will need an anti nausea injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better. if the vet thinks it is more serious she will need a blood test and possibly an ultrasound in order to find out what is wrong.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Hepatitis (infection and inflammation of liver) is a very serious condition and is very hard to treat. If there is an internal medicine specialist in the area I would recommend having Nala seen by them. Otherwise I would be talking with your vet about testing for infectious diseases. However, it looks like they have treated her with broad spectrum antibiotics as well as IV fluids. I would recommend continuing treatment. She may need a feeding tube placed to try to keep her protein up during this illness. Unfortunately, with how severe this is, she may or may not pull through it, but the best chance of her making it through is to be aggressive with her treatment. I would suggest continuing to monitor her liver and white cell count, and to have imaging done and possible samples of her liver to try to determine the cause of the infection. Otherwise I would be talking to your vet about the parasites and infections present in your area and get covered with certain antibiotics. The white cells have increased however not that much, and the liver enzymes are actually improving if I can read the dates right from your picture. This is very hopeful. I would continue with antibiotics (IV if you cannot get them in orally), as well as IV fluids and I would think about syringe feeding or placing a feeding tube. It is certainly a positive that Nilo is improving, but it is necessary to rule-out any underlying diseases that can have waxing/waning clinical signs. If he has been having diarrhea I typically recommend my patients to also bring a fecal sample so that it can be tested for parasites or other infectious causes of gastrointestinal upset.
