My dog has diarrhea for 24 hours. When should I take her to the vet?

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 75 lbs

Nala has had diahrea for 24 hours. I withheld food for 12 hours then fed her boiled chicken. She is active but isn't really interested in water. She had no problem eating..... when should i consider taking her to the vet?

Diarrhea lasting longer than 24-48 hours may cause dehydration and other problems so it is a good idea to have Nala seen soon. You can consider making her a bland diet of boiled chicken and sweet potato or rice (with added water) to see if this helps, but it sounds like Nala may need some medication to help her feel better.

Hello! I'm sorry to hear that Nala has been sick. You should take her to the vet in the morning if the diarrhea continues. I worry about dehydration with diarrhea for more than 24 hours, and the fact that she hasn't improved with supportive care concerns me. I'm very glad she's eating, however! If anything changes, such as she starts vomiting or becomes lethargic, I recommend bringing her to an emergency vet. The diarrhea may be caused by a virus that will pass with additional care, but there is always the possibility of something more serious going on, like an obstruction. At the vet's office, you can expect that they will give Nala a full physical exam. They will most likely want to check a stool sample for parasites, as this is a very common cause of diarrhea. They may also recommend an x-ray and/or bloodwork. I can almost guarantee that they will give Nala some fluids under her skin to help with dehydration, and this works wonders for starting the healing process.

It depends on how long Tara has had diarrhea. If it's been less than 24 hours, you can try the following home remedy. Withhold food for 12 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. If it's been longer than 24 hours, yes take her into the vet. I hope this helps!

Poor Morticia! The diarrhea could be due to many conditions including eating something she shouldn’t have, bacterial over growth, parasites or even organ disease. If the diarrhea has continued beyond 24 hours, I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian. With continued diarrhea, there are often bacterial shifts in the gut that will make matters worse regardless of the initial cause. Make sure to bring in a sample of fresh stool. The doctor will check her for parasites and bacterial over growth. Many times a bland diet can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normal food can be done. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. I hope Morticia starts feeling better quickly! My dog ate raw meat, has diarrhea, and won't eat. What should I do?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I’m sorry Nala isn’t feeling well. I would recommend a veterinarian visits as the next step. Nala may have pancreatitis or gastritis that needs antibiotics or other medications. She may need fluid therapy if she has become dehydrated. The vet will get a history and perform a physical exam then may recommend doing bloodwork or checking a stool sample depending on their findings. I hope she’s better soon.

My dog has had diarrhea for 4 days, should I take him to the vet?

I recommend giving Chico a bland diet, boiled chicken and white rice. If he becomes lethargic, there is blood or he isn't eating then I recommend taking Chico to a veterinarian. Also if the diarrhea isn't resolving after another day I would consider taking him to a veterinarian. My dog has diarrhea for 3 days and house accidents. When to see vet?

Since he is going every 3-4 hours it might be a good idea to take him to the vet to prescribe medications to help resolve the diarrhea, especially since he is going in the house at night. If you wanted to try some treatment at home, you could withhold food for 12 hours and then try a small amount of a bland diet, like boiled chicken and white rice. If the diarrhea has improved then continue the bland diet for a few days and slowly transition back to his normal food. You could also add a dog probiotic to his diet. Puppy has diarrhea for 2 days. When should I worry and what to do?

If Kiki has mild diarrhea but is acting normal and has a good appetite, she may have ingested something she shouldn't have - puppies explore the world with their mouth, and sometimes they eat things that can upset their GI tracts! You can give her some bland food (white rice and lowfat cooked chicken) and see if it improves in the next day or two. Many mild cases of diarrhea are self-limiting and will resolve with bland food. If, however, the diarrhea is severe, or is accompanied by a decreased appetite or vomiting, or continues more than a couple days, Kiki should be seen by a vet. Diarrhea can be caused by many things including stress, diet changes, and infections, and your vet will be able to help differentiate what's going on and start her on medication if needed.
