My 6-month pit bull mix rarely barks, and it's deep. Is this okay?

Nothings wrong. Some pets just don't bark really. It doesn't mean he is sick or that there is anything medically wrong with him. He is just a really calm dog that doesn't feel the need to bark. And likely as he gets older he will bark every now and again, but it seems this just isn't in his nature and he is content with life.

That may be due to a nerve degeneration that can happen in large breeds of dogs like Great Danes or Labradors. The nerve involved is commonly the laryngeal nerve and other long nerves as well (sciatic). I would recommend a check up to confirm or rule out this clinical suspicion and treat appropriately.

This could be due to a degeneration of the laryngeal nerve that is innervating the larynx being in charge of its movement (vocal chords included). Inflammation of this nerve and upper respiratory airways infection is possible as well. You can have Bruno's throat checked by the vet, just to be sure, but I think his throat is fine. Dogs have many different kinds of barks and sounds, as humans have a variety of voice tones we use, to express, pleasure, anger, warning, joy, etc. I believe his barks as you describe them are appropriate for the circumstances.

It could be that Spike is suffering from a respiratory infection, which can cause the change in his bark. There is a potential it could be due to cancer, trauma, infection, or an abscess. I wouldn't be concerned, but I would have him seen by a vet for this. The vet can do a physical exam, blood tests, urinalysis, and possibly x-rays to diagnose what is causing the change in his voice, and can treat him for it.
