Interesting question. I would follow your doctors recommendations about exposure to people and stick to those guidelines. I think that there would not be enough radioactive exposure to harm the cats. Their lifespan is so much shorter than people’s the effects of radiation would not develop for many years when they would be already gone. We generally do not worry too much with an adult pet mainly because they just do not have the lifespan that we do. It would not hurt not to hold Ruby or let her sit in your lap for 24 hours, but this is really not a major concern. She can stay with you. Usually cats do well with the radio active iodine therapy. There is a chance for them to become hypo thyroid meeting they would need thyroid supplementation after the treatment. But generally speaking most cats do very well and no further treatment is needed. However your veterinarian will need to make sure there's no other underlying issues such as early kidney disease prior to doing the radio active iodine therapy. If they do find other issues then your cat may not be a good candidate for that treatment but other treatments such as daily medication or even surgery to remove part of her thyroid gland might be options.

The radiation is good treatment option, however it's important start with the oral pill (methimazole) first to make sure his body tolerates having lower thyroid levels first. When we get the thyroid disease under control sometimes we uncover kidney disease that was always there. The other down sides of A131 are cost, availability of the treatment (you have to go to a facility, this isn't something your vet can do), and the process (needing to stay at the facility, I believe it's 3 days but you'd have to check on the protocol at your local facility).

Nasal mites are usually killed pretty quickly with the treatment however, we are not actually 100% of their complete life cycle at this time. So, it is probably best to keep him away from other dogs until one week after his clinical signs resolve.

I'm so sorry to hear this. Whether or not to do chemotherapy/radiation is a personal choice. It is completely up to you. If you have the financial means to do so and the dog is in good health otherwise then I see no reason no to do so. If the dog is very ill and/or you do not have the finances then you may elect not to pursue this treatment. Again, it is a personal choice. I suggest you consult a veterinary oncologist to get more information on the specific type of cancer he has and what the prognosis is.
