What happens if my dog gets a rabies shot again before it expires?

He will be fine in the long term but it is possible for him to have a reaction the vaccine such as swelling or redness or vomiting or diarrhea. The best thing to do is check the records and make sure they are under the correct owner and animal name at the vet because sometimes they can have 2 files of the same animal under different owners ( yours and your parents) and not realize they are the same. From there ask them to adjust the reminds so you only have him being due in 1-3 years from now based on your areas laws

That partially depends on the state laws and where you live. Generally most vets will give the vaccine if the expiration date is within 6 weeks. If live in a state that allows 3 year rabies vaccines and you pet has already had one and is due for another 3 year vaccine, the vet may give that 6 months before the actual due date if it is more convenient for the owner. He can get his rabies and restart his distemper combo series. He'll likely get 2 of them 3 weeks apart. Once he finishes those vaccines he'll be protected for the next year. Hello, and thanks for your question. I'm wondering if the rabies vaccine product or protocol is a bit different in India vs the United States. Our typical protocol with a previously vaccinated (up-to-date) dog who may have been exposed to a rabid animal (such as a wild animal or unvaccinated dog) is to booster the dog immediately with another rabies vaccine - just once....and then get back on the standard vaccine schedule of every 3 years. We don't typically do the multi-dose PEP you're describing, although that protocol would be given to people with exposure. However, rabies is much more endemic in your area - so I would defer to the advice of your local vet who treats far more rabies exposure cases than we would. If the original plan (prior to your dog's second altercation with another stray) was to give the two additional shots on the 4th and 5th, then I would probably stick with this plan. All vaccines can carry a small risk of reaction - but there's no "overdose" per say. And any risk of vaccine reaction is negligible compared to the risk of actual rabies exposure, in a rabies endemic area. So it is always best to err on the side of protection from rabies. It's great that you're being conscientious about her vaccines! From an immunologic perspective, nothing significant is changing in Lola's immune system between now and Saturday, so getting the booster done then will be fine. From a legal perspective, the rabies vaccine expires exactly 1 year from the initial booster, so she will be considered "unvaccinated" for a couple days. I wouldn't be too worried about you boostering her a couple days late - but to be on the safe side, just limit her exposure to strangers or other dogs for those few days until she's vaccinated again, to avoid the rare chance of someone getting bitten and inquiring about her rabies status. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Roy. Rabies is vaccination that is required by law and as you mentioned his lifestyle included exposure to wildlife. I would recommend that he has this vaccine at the veterinary hospital. He can be given an injection ahead of time to keep him from suffering the allergic reaction that he did last time. Hi there. Do you mean, he had his rabies vaccine a little early - since it wasn't actually due until Nov. 15th? That won't cause any issues at all, and shouldn't be anything to worry about. It's very common to give vaccines a few months early in some cases, if that works out more easily to get everything on the same schedule. :)
