How often should my 3-year-old dog get a rabies booster vaccine?

The length of time between rabies vaccine boosters varies from state to state. In California, dogs over the age of 4 months should receive a rabies vaccination. This initial rabies vaccine is only good for 1 year. Every subsequent rabies vaccine is every third year.

Rabies vaccines are known to provide adequate immunity for at-least three years. In many dogs, the immunity is even longer and there will always be some amount of immunity if they have been vaccinated before. However, in countries like the Philippines where rabies is more prevalent, it's recommended to get a vaccine every year to ensure the immunity is high. He will be fine in the long term but it is possible for him to have a reaction the vaccine such as swelling or redness or vomiting or diarrhea. The best thing to do is check the records and make sure they are under the correct owner and animal name at the vet because sometimes they can have 2 files of the same animal under different owners ( yours and your parents) and not realize they are the same. From there ask them to adjust the reminds so you only have him being due in 1-3 years from now based on your areas laws

This is typically for rabies and distemper-parvo. But different counties/states may have their own rules regarding rabies as it is required by law. A titer for distemper-parvo can also be performed instead of just routine vaccination. Lepto and bordetella are based on the pets risk and not core vaccines. This will depend on the type of vaccines used. Usually your dog will need a once yearly rabies vaccination, and a once yearly DAPP2 vaccination. Depending on where you live and whether he has access to water puddles, ponds, etc, he will also need a once yearly Leptospirosis Vaccination. Consult with your pet doctor, he will recommend what is needed in your area.

The "core" vaccines that Bentley *should* have received as a puppy are his rabies vaccine (usually given between 12-16 weeks of age) and his distemper/parvovirus vaccines (usually given every 3-4 weeks from 8 to over 16 weeks of age). Both these vaccines would be boostered a year later. If you have no vaccine history on Bentley, then it's best to err on the side of making sure he's protected. It won't hurt him to get the vaccines now, even if he received them as a puppy. I would definitely get him vaccinated for rabies and distemper/parvovirus, and then I'd recommend talking to your vet about the other "non-core" vaccines they recommend for your area and Bentley's potential risk. Possible additional vaccines could include bordetella ("Kennel cough"), canine influenza, lyme, and leptospirosis.
