Do indoor adult dogs need yearly vaccines and deworming often?

I am attaching a link to the American Animal Hospital Association's vaccine guideline below. https://www.aaha.org/guidelines/canine_vaccination_guidelines/practice_vaccination.aspx In general, they recommend that all dogs receive DAPP and Rabies vaccinations. Those vaccines are considered Core vaccinations. Any other vaccinations are considered Non-Core and are only recommended for dogs that are at risk of contracting those diseases. The above website also includes a Lifestyle-Based Vaccine Calculator to help you determine which diseases your dogs may be at risk for, but be sure to discuss that with your veterinarian to make the best decision. DAPP vaccinations are generally given every 3 years in adult dogs. The Rabies vaccination is given every 1-3 years depending on your local requirements. The non-core vaccinations do not appear to last as long, so those vaccination need to be given more frequently, but it sounds like your dogs are not likely at risk for those diseases. Good luck! Hello. Adult dogs should be kept current on their Rabies vaccination, Distemper/hepatitis/leptospirosis/parainfluenza/parvo vaccines. Depending on their lifestyle, Bordetella and Influenza may be recommended. These would be important for dogs that board at kennel facilities, go to groomers or frequent dog parks. It is recommended to have a yearly physical examination with animals. Ideally they would be seen every 6 months. This is because animals age a lot faster then people and catching diseases and behavioral problems earlier is beneficial. Regarding vaccinations the first rabies vaccination is good for 1 year. After that it is good for 3 years. The Distemper vaccination after the first series should be repeated in a year. Depending on Kaya's lifestyle then I would recommend doing it every 1 or 3 years. If there are a lot of dogs or Kaya goes to a daycare/dogpark/kennel then I would give it every year. It depends on the vaccine, the age of the animal and a few other environmental considerations. The core vaccines (Rabies, Distemper, Parvo, Adenovirus2, Parainfluenza) are normally given every three years after they are over a year old. The necessity for other vaccines (leptospirosis, Bordetella, etc.) will depend on the dog's environment and are given more frequently. Hello. A lot depends on what might be considered a problem in your area. For example, there have only been sporadic outbreaks across the country of Canine Influenza, & Lymes Disease is more of an issue east of the Mississippi. The AVMA considers the core or necessary vaccinations Rabies, Distemper, Adenovirus & Parvovirus, all of which can be given every 1, 2 or 3 years. You need to discuss this with your veterinarian as to what they see in their other patients, & also what you are comfortable with given your lifestyle with Cloud. Hi there! Some dog owners do opt to vaccinate on a more extended schedule, since there is evidence that the vaccines for distemper, parvo, etc. probably provide immunity for several years in most dogs after the initial series is finished. However, Tia may need vaccinations for other illnesses such as Bordetella (kennel cough), leptospirosis, etc. which do need to be given yearly. And of course, she needs a yearly wellness exam regardless to check for any problems :) I would recommend discussing this topic with your veterinarian to see what he/she suggests for Tia given her age and overall health status. You could also opt to have vaccine titers done to see if she has a protective level of antibody present, and make your decision based on that.

Puppies need a series of DA2PP (also called DHPP, combo boosters or Distemper/Parvo) vaccinations every 2-4 weeks until they reach at least 16 weeks of age (but up to 18-20 weeks in some cases). Lepto is an optional vaccination that does need to be boostered once. Bordatella is an optional vaccination as well. What your veterinarian is recommending appears to be the appropriate boosters of the vaccines that Toffee previously received.
