My dog's rabies vaccine is overdue. Is there a grace period?

You are correct, the first rabies vaccine is only good for one year. After that, depending on where you live, the next rabies vaccine could be good for three years. Some cities/states still require the rabies vaccine to be given every year though so you need to check what the law is in your area. Your vet will know. All, that being said, with her rabies vaccine being overdue - you need to update it as soon as possible and it may only be marked good for one year because you are overdue. Although it is highly recommended that all vaccinations are completed on time, especially the Rabies vaccine, 3 days overdue should be fine. Hugo should still be protected from the immunity he developed in response to his first vaccine one year ago. I would advise taking extra precautions during these three days and keeping Hugo indoors and away from other dogs, and other animals. The vaccine is only recommended to be administered prior to the lot expiry date, however the vaccine once administered does not expire within he body as it only serves to create antibodies which again, will likely last all years that the certificate is good for. Yes of course. There is only 1 Rabies vaccine used in most clinics. However, we can make this 1 vaccine good for 3 years if your pet is over the age of 1 and has already received their adult 1 year booster. But the exact same vaccine is given to every pet, whether they are a young puppy, or an adult dog. The difference is that in a young puppy, the rabies vaccine will only protect them for 1 year due to their still developing immune system, but when they are of adult age, it can last for 3 years. That partially depends on the state laws and where you live. Generally most vets will give the vaccine if the expiration date is within 6 weeks. If live in a state that allows 3 year rabies vaccines and you pet has already had one and is due for another 3 year vaccine, the vet may give that 6 months before the actual due date if it is more convenient for the owner. It also depends on her if vaccines are current or not if she can be eligible for a 3 year vaccine. For example, a 1 year rabies vaccine is given to a puppy. Then she would receive the 3 year vaccine as an adult. If her vaccines stay current, she would need a booster every 3 years.
