My dog was diagnosed with Pythiosis. Is it fatal? What are treatments?

If you are referring to the infection leptospirosis, then yes this can be cured though it normally requires a long course of therapy and patients unfortunately can die from this condition if not treated appropriately and in a timely fashion. Some patients need to be in the hospital if they are doing poorly most of the time when the liver is severely affected. Good luck and have a great day!

Hi there and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach, I am sorry to hear of Cooper's diagnosis. This can be very hard to say without seeing Cooper first. The prognosis does depend on if the disease was caught early or late, and what treatments Cooper is currently receiving. Younger animals generally fair a bit worse with a leptospirosis infection than older animals. Typically, prognosis is better if caught early and not so good if caught late in the game as the leptospirosis bacteria can cause organ damage in late or advanced stages. A diagnosis of Leishmaniosis is not automatically death sentence as this disease can be treated and eventually cured or at least its progression can be slowed down. This would require a staging of the disease first before being able to give you a reliable prognosis. I'm sorry Niomie is so sick. Pyometra is an infection of the uterus where the uterus basically fills with pus and infection. Dogs can become septic from this if the toxins and bacteria get into the bloodstream or if the uterus ruptures spilling the infection into the abdomen. Surgery is Niomies best chance at survival but this can be fatal even with the best of care and surgery. Surgery will remove the source of infection, but on recovery dogs still need fluids, pain medication and antibiotics post operative ly. Hoping that she pulls through and recovers well.

I'm so sorry to hear that Oreo has leptospirosis. Fortunately, most dogs (80-90%) do very well with treatment and fully recover. Dogs that are sick from leptospirosis should start to improve quickly once they are started on antibiotics, so if Oreo is not starting to feel better within 24 hours (or feels worse at any point), be sure to contact your veterinarian in case he needs additional treatment. Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. So sorry that Gigi is having this issue. The lesion on her nose could sure be due to Leishmania which is prevalent in the Middle East however, it could be due to other causes. Was any testing done to confirm the leishmania? Cytology, biopsy, histopathology, serology? There is no cure for Leishmania however, treatment can often keep the disease at bay. Treatment is lifelong is most cases. If organ failure/involvement is already present then the likelihood the of the medications working is minimal. Also, treatment is often expensive and cost prohibitive for many people. The prognosis overall is not great.
