My dog has pyometra symptoms. Should I get another X-ray or an ultrasound?

Symptoms may include lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, frequent urination, distended abdomen or vaginal discharge (this is not always present however). You should have Dahlia examined by your veterinarian. An abdominal xray or ultrasound should be able to provide a definitive diagnosis. If she needs surgery, an echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart) can be done prior to assess cardiac architecture and function. A murmur itself is not an indication of cardiac disease.

That sounds like a tough situation. Intact female dogs are always at risk of a pyometra, and they aren’t always easy to diagnose. Ultrasound is better for diagnosis than x-rays. Mammary masses can be benign or malignant, but even benign masses can get bigger and cause problems. You could try calling around for a price that is less expensive, but having both surgeries done at the same time will cost a lot. An enlarged liver could also be concerning.

Hello. The pus in her uterus is a very serious condition called pyometra. Usually, the best way to deal with this is to perform an ovariohysterectomy & spay her. The only time to consider treating this condition with medications is if Chuski is a valuable breeding animal. But you are risking her health & she could die from this. Please consider the surgery. Unfortunately, the x-rays are not showing up as well here as the originals would, so I'll comment on what I see, but I could easily be missing something. The heart does not appear enlarged, but their are some distended arteries in the x-ray that make me suspicious of heart disease and more specifically heartworm. The abdomen is generally distended and the liver appears somewhat enlarged. This can happen with the heart disease I mentioned or some other condition affecting the liver. I do not see an obvious pyometra on the x-rays or ultrasound (sonogram). I wish I could help you with the other questions, but it's impossible without me knowing the cat's full history, or having the opportunity to examine the cat myself. It's a little difficult to see for certain in the picture, but I do see a fluid filled structure in the photo near the urinary bladder that certainly could be the uterus. In your final picture the discharge on the ground does not look what I would typically expect from vaginitis. You may want to get a third opinion from a veterinarian if you're concerned about going forward with surgery. If it is a uterine infection it is unlikely to clear with antibiotics alone and even if it does the infection returns with the next heat cycle, so I typically recommend surgery whenever I am concerned about a pyometra.

Your poor pup! If she isn't spayed, I would be very concerned that she has a pyometra. This is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment, and it would cause a white discharge as well as vomiting. It sounds like your vet may have been suspicious she had a pyometra and tried treating it medically with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs. Unfortunately the medical route often isn't successful, and surgery is needed to treat it. This means spaying her. I would take her back into the vet immediately, as this is a medical emergency. As she is unspayed i strongly suspect a uterine infection, it can often be missed on blood test and xray. i strongly recommend taking her urgently to the vet for a recheck, an ultrasound needs to be done and bloods needs to be repeated, if this is what i suspect, she will need an emergency surgery to have her uterus removed.
