What are pyometra symptoms in an unspayed dog with a heart murmur?

Increased thirst and urination, decreased appetite, lethargy and abdominal pain are the signs of a pyometra where the cervix is closed. If the cervix is open you might see vulvar discharge. You may want to relay your concerns about pyometra to the other party in the agreement - Dahlia is too old for breeding at this point and it seems unusual that someone wouldn't want her to be spayed when pyometra is a real risk.

Unfortunately, the x-rays are not showing up as well here as the originals would, so I'll comment on what I see, but I could easily be missing something. The heart does not appear enlarged, but their are some distended arteries in the x-ray that make me suspicious of heart disease and more specifically heartworm. The abdomen is generally distended and the liver appears somewhat enlarged. This can happen with the heart disease I mentioned or some other condition affecting the liver. I do not see an obvious pyometra on the x-rays or ultrasound (sonogram). I wish I could help you with the other questions, but it's impossible without me knowing the cat's full history, or having the opportunity to examine the cat myself. Your poor pup! If she isn't spayed, I would be very concerned that she has a pyometra. This is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment, and it would cause a white discharge as well as vomiting. It sounds like your vet may have been suspicious she had a pyometra and tried treating it medically with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs. Unfortunately the medical route often isn't successful, and surgery is needed to treat it. This means spaying her. I would take her back into the vet immediately, as this is a medical emergency. Unless my patients are in congestive heart failure, I do not hesitate to spay them with a heart murmur. Hello, sorry to hear about Mamas. An x-ray would indeed show a large pus filled uterus as in the case with pyometras. However, a smaller uterus may not be evident on radiographs. An even more sensitive test for detection of pyometras would be an abdominal ultrasound. You may speak with your veterinarian about obtaining an abdominal ultrasound or referring you to a practice with ultrasound capabilities to confirm the presence of a pyometra. Alternative, Mamas could have other causes for her signs such as a dietary indiscretion, or even ingestion of foreign material. Given that bloodwork and x-rays have already been performed, then next diagnostic step is to pursue an abdominal ultrasound regardless. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Hello. The pus in her uterus is a very serious condition called pyometra. Usually, the best way to deal with this is to perform an ovariohysterectomy & spay her. The only time to consider treating this condition with medications is if Chuski is a valuable breeding animal. But you are risking her health & she could die from this. Please consider the surgery. Poor girl. Pyometra doesn't usually cause just bloody discharge. It will be a foul smelling pink discharge or no discharge at all. However, if she had her last heat cycle 1-2 months ago and now appears to be having a similar heat cycle, then I would definitely suspect that she has pyometra. At any rate, because she is so ill, I would highly recommend Zoe see your local vet for a thorough exam and medical care. Any pet that refuses food for more than 24-48 hrs should be seen, because an underlying illness is present that needs to be identified and treated for.
