My dog has pyometra and is nauseous. How can I help her eat?

Yes Baytril can help both in case of pyometra and aspiration pneumonia. Dose would depend on weight so I cannot really tell. Unfortunately though a check up is needed as pyometra could be resolved surgically in most of the cases. Megaoesophagus would require more investigations (ideally radiographs) to be diagnosed properly. Vomiting could be secondary to systemic infection or could have other origins (not easy to determine without more clinical informations at this stage). I worry that she will become dehydrated from not eating properly. She may requires some fluids under her skin to help rehydrate her. Additional pain medication may also need to be prescribed. If she is nauseous and this is affecting her appetite, anti-nausea medication can be given. The initial doses of her antibiotics can be given by injection to get those medications started. Once she is feeling better, then it should be easier to give her these medications. In the meantime, do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I'm so sorry Laney is so sick! Unfortunately a pyometra is an extremely serious infection and it does make a dog very sick. Sometimes even with surgical and medical treatment, the dog is so sick that it cannot survive, but I certainly hope that isn't the case with Laney! You are doing the right thing by taking her back into the vet for more treatment, and it may be a good idea to have her hospitalized with the vet. If she is with the vet full time, she can have constant monitoring and they may be able to try medications that stimulate her appetite. I can tell you are fighting for her, and I would speak with your vet to see if they feel hospitalizing her is the best option. Give her lots of love as well, which I'm sure you are doing. Antibiotics can be used, but they don't always cure a pyometra. The best treatment is surgery. If Narly cannot have surgery and she has cancer, it may be best to let her go peacefully. Pyometras make the dog extremely sick, and you do not want her to suffer if she cannot have surgery. There is no guarantee antibiotics will even help. I would speak to her vet about possibly letting her go if she can't have surgery. I am sorry.

Most of the dogs will improve within 24hrs from starting the antibiotics. However, pyometra is a serious, debilitating disease and many dogs will not get back to normal (despite antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications) until they get spayed. If Ella has been on antibiotics for longer than 48hrs and she has not made any improvement, you should get her checked by your local vets again.

I'm sorry to hear that your little girl is not feeling well. For a UTI, that is an appropriate dose of Baytril. Unfortunately, Baytril, along with most other antibiotics, can cause vomiting. You can either try to give the pill with food or cut it in half and give half of the tablet every 12 hours. This way she still gets the full pill every day, but decreasing the amount given at one time may decrease the upset stomach she is experiencing. If she continues to vomit, I would recommend contacting your veterinarian as she may need to get a different antibiotic if she can't tolerate the Baytril.
