My dog won't eat or drink after pyrometra surgery. What should I do?

This is not normal, so I would be somewhat concerned. I would be more concerned if she was also vomiting, had diarrhea, and/or a decrease in activity. Some pain medications can cause side-effects in the stomach and usually have directions not to give these when they are not eating. Make sure to double-check the medication labels for these warnings. I'm so sorry Laney is so sick! Unfortunately a pyometra is an extremely serious infection and it does make a dog very sick. Sometimes even with surgical and medical treatment, the dog is so sick that it cannot survive, but I certainly hope that isn't the case with Laney! You are doing the right thing by taking her back into the vet for more treatment, and it may be a good idea to have her hospitalized with the vet. If she is with the vet full time, she can have constant monitoring and they may be able to try medications that stimulate her appetite. I can tell you are fighting for her, and I would speak with your vet to see if they feel hospitalizing her is the best option. Give her lots of love as well, which I'm sure you are doing. No, that is not normal. She should be put on broad spectrum antibiotics. There may be an infection in the uterine tissue that is remaining in the abdomen (stump pyometra). A second surgery may be needed to remove the infective tissue. The bloodwork shows a high white blood cell count indicating infection. Some of her liver enzymes are mildly elevated but I don't think they are significant at this time. She needs to be evaluated for a stump pyometra. Poor girl. I would definitely recommend taking her in for a recheck appt since she has gone more than 48 hrs without eating at least 1/2 of her food. They need to check her incision area thoroughly for any signs of infection and potentially get her on an appetite stimulant during her recovery process. Maybe baytril is not the only reason for the nausea, Pyometra is also known to cause nausea and vomiting. Baytril is also not enough to treat pyometra, Prostaglandin as well as Alyzin need to be prescribed. generally speaking your vet can try giving her Cerenia to try and treat the nausea, if it does not help i strongly recommend having her spayed urgently.

If the medication being given isn't helping and Sushi has been refusing food and water for nearly a week it is best to bring her back to your vet ASAP. It is possible there is an infection that requires different or IV antibiotics to target it, and IV fluids and other treatment are needed to help with dehydration and loss of appetite.

It's possible that you may need to refill your antibiotic prescription. Your doctor may be able to do this over the phone. It's possible that the original prescription or infection may have cause an imbalance in Hooka's stomach. If you notice any vomiting and diarrhea hasn't gone away over the next 24 hours, you might consider offering her a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice until it subsides.
