My dog's tooth is pink/purple. Does he need a vet if not in pain?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The purple tooth did not happen from damage yesterday but it does need to be addressed. A purple tooth means the root is dead and that can lead to an infection. I would take Rufus to a vet (not an emergency) and discuss removal of the tooth. It isn’t a tooth he needs to eat or chew and he will be happier to have the bad tooth removed. Good luck and kisses to Rufus!

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Judging from the pictures, it appears that the tooth may have been traumatized. This may or may not have compromised the health of the tooth. I would recommend a dental cleaning to remove any tartar and also to get x-rays done of that particular tooth to see if there is any evidence the tooth is broken below the gingiva or if there is disease of the pulp chamber of the tooth. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Pharah. Yes, she will need to see her veterinarian. With the tooth broken in that manner, the root canal sounds exposed. This will be very painful for her. It will also allow an infection to develop within that tooth. She may need to have the tooth extracted. Most dogs do not shows signs of oral pain, so it may be difficult to tell based on her behavior at home. I suspect it is very painful though. I hope this information helps!

Many dogs have no complications from such an injury and extraction is complicated with a risk of fracture and non healing wounds. I would recommend close monitoring and xray of the tooth to assess for any bone loss around the tooth in 6-12months

That is Finn’s baby tooth. The discoloration generally indicates an injury to the tooth but it could indicate an abscess. Finn will not lose this toother for another 4-8 weeks. I recommend to call your veterinarian since they are most familiar with Finn. They may recommend an exam or may tell you to monitor at home. Your doctor will make the call. I hope this helps.

It may indeed have been compromised while chewing. It may heal on it's own or not. You would need to have Frankie seen by your veterinarian. A dental x-ray may be recommended to further assess the tooth. If it has been damaged, it may need to be extracted.

I'm sorry that you are dealing with this with Kohl. Dental disease is very common in our dogs. If Kohl had 2 teeth fall out and needed 3 teeth extracted at his dental last year, then he likely had fairly significant dental disease. Often, we try to save as many teeth as we can when we perform a dental, but if they are too diseased, then our efforts may be futile. A tooth becomes discolored when its blood supply is interrupted. If Kohl frequently uses his front teeth to pull on things, this could be due to trauma. Once a tooth is discolored, it is considered "dead" and should be removed to prevent infection. Unfortunately, I would recommend that Kohl have another dental performed. If your vet did not do x-rays of his mouth, he should have that done and have any teeth extracted that have abnormal bone on x-rays. If your vet does not have dental x-ray, you can go to a veterinary dentist.
