My old dog has purple lumps and swelling. Is it time to put her down?

It sounds like he may be suffering from Lymphoma which is a terminal disease at his age. you should take him to the vet ASAP to get it confirmed, if this is the case- euthanasia should be considered.

Poor Felony! If this lump is leaking pus, then it might be an abscess and not a tumor, as pus is a sign of infection. I think it's worth having Felony and this lump checked out by a vet. Should it be an abscess, then it can be treated with antibiotics. If it does turn out to be a tumor, then I would definitely assess her quality of life. I work for a home euthanasia service, so I face these questions all the time with my clients. I always recommend making a list of five things your dogs loves to do, and when they no longer do at least two of them, their quality of life has declined to the point where euthanasia should be considered. My professional opinion is to have Felony seen by a vet to see if the lump is an abscess. An abscess doesn't mean she has to be put down, and you could have more time with her, so it's definitely worth checking out. I hope this helps!

There is no way of knowing for sure without an examination though this represents a reason to seek veterinary care. This is usually determined with an examination and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) or a biopsy. Treatment depends on the findings up to that point. I think it would be best to have her evaluated before considering euthanasia as this may be able to be treated. Euthanasia is a very personal decision that must be made between you, your animal, and your veterinarian. It sounds like Baby has plenty of problems but still has some good days. Hello. That is a rather large mammary tumor. At this point, it is probably inoperable. The question now is the quality of Pea's life. Does she eat & drink well? Does she go about her business every day? Does she still interact & love you? I think we all know in our hearts when it is time to let a pet go. Euthanasia is a difficult decision for all involved. Without examining Nels, I can't say how her quality of life may be affected by this hanging mass, the cause of the mass, or any possible treatments. The best way to determine the underlying cause of Nels' mass is to take her to the vet for an exam and fine needle aspirate (FNA). The FNA is performed by sticking a needle into the mass to draw out a few cells and then examine them microscopically. This procedure is generally quick and relatively painless. From there, you should have more information as to whether the lesion is benign or malignant, and your vet will be able to provide more information as to whether or not surgery and antibiotics are indicated. If Nels is otherwise eating, drinking, and acting normally, I would recommend getting more information before making a life-ending decision.

Poor Dixie! Lipomas are fatty tumors, so if these lumps feel like they have fluid in them, then they are more likely cysts. As for her bad hips, the vet can prescribe her pain medications to help with those, which will likely make her feel and move a a lot better. I certainly wouldn't put her down if she had treatable problems. I would have Dixie seen by a vet tomorrow to discuss using pain medication for her hips, and to have her lumps diagnosed and possibly treated. I hope this helps :-)
