My senior dog has lumps and hip pain. Is it time to say goodbye?

Mija is limping because she is in pain. Unfortunately there are no human pain relievers you can give her, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. These bumps may be a part of her normal anatomy. I would have her seen by a vet.

Poor Lily! These lumps look quite irritated and ulcerated. She may already be experiencing some degree of pain and discomfort from these lumps, as indicated by her chewing on them. Other signs of pain in dogs include a decreased appetite, lethargy, and abnormal vocalization. When it comes to surgery, age is not a disease, so if Lily's physical exam and pre-operative blood testing is normal, she is likely to do well with surgical removal of these lumps. It may be worth discussing surgical options, as well as pain medication options, with Lily's vet. I hope this helps and that all goes well!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Without seeing Genesis it's hard to say. If the lumps are symmetric and soft, it is likely fatty subcutaneous tissue. Like "love handles" in people. Again, without seeing her I can't say that for sure but this is a common area where fat is stored on dogs and owners commonly are worried about it. Please have her checked by your vet as soon as possible. This is not normal and although any lumps are concerning, any that are painful or rapidly growing are very suspicious for underlying issues such as cancer. Early diagnosis and treatment is vital to improve outcomes and reduce undue pain and discomfort.

Poor guy. That is a lot to consider. Here is a good treatment plan. Tumor on belly- I would recommend getting this removed surgically and then sending it off for analysis so that you know if it is benign or cancerous, and if any further treatment is recommended. Arthritis- you can attempt to manage this with over the counter Dasuquin. This product works very well for mild arthritis symptoms. But if his arthritis symptoms are moderate to severe, then he will respond better to prescription medications and/or arthritis injections (Adequan) through your vet. Swollen elbows- I would really have to visualize this in order to give you recommendations on care. If you are trying to describe calluses on the elbows, then getting Dixie soft bedding can help this. Calluses in general however are not harmful or painful to your pet, because they are the body's response to laying on hard surfaces. This is a way for the body to protect itself from cuts or abrasions developing on the skin. Wart-like lump in ear- Warts are quite common in older dogs. They are usually benign however and don't require treatment unless they start to bother your pet Dixie or if they ulcerate and/or bleed. If the wart does become a problem then surgically removal is how you would resolve this.

Hip dysplasia does not cause lumps or bumps. I would be concerned this is a tumor and I recommend to have her examined. Older dogs (just like people) are more prone to develop lumps/bumps and some of these can be cancerous. Older pets are also more prone to arthritis. If your dog is happy and you feel that she has a good quality of life and can poop fairly easily, there is no reason to put her down. Listen to your dog. She will tell you when it is time to go. Your dog knows. Apart from that there are quite a few ways to control pain. 1) arthritis pain is probably the worst and worse than tumor pain at this stage. So if she is stiff and wobbly you may want to ask your vet about giving her an NSAIDs for arthritis (she needs to have normal kidney and liver parameters, though, but since you had surgery done recently, your vet may be able to use those blood work results). 2) if she cannot take NSAIDs, then there are other pain medicines available. The lumps under the skin either side of her anus could be filled anal sacs which could be expressed. They may not be tumors. Your vet may be able to stop the bleeding of the tumor by cauterising it, or you can get some Yunnan Baiyao powder or capsules and put the powder on the bleeding wound. It should stop the bleeding for a while.
