Is grain-free dog food safe? Worried about heart issues. Affordable food?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | 75 lbs

I've been feeding grain free since puppyhood. Now I'm hearing it can possibly cause heart problems. 2 Golden retrievers and a German shepherd. Should I change foods. I don't want to harm my babies. What is the best food to give them at a reasonable price? I am very concerned.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I definitely understand your concern. I do think it would be best to switch them to a regular diet. There are many types out there that are affordable and good. I like the Purina Pro Plan shredded blends in that category because they are palatable, affordable and of very good quality. Good luck and have a great day!

Great question! Yes, I would definitely put them back onto a diet with grains. Brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. Have them checked out by a vet to be safe to make sure their hearts are are ok. I hope this helps!
