My 8-week Shih Tzu puppy has a big belly, pants. Could it be worms?

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 7 days old | 6 lbs

I just bought a 8 weeks old Shih Tzu puppy, and his body is very disproportionate. His lower body is way bigger than the top half. I believe his stomach is quite big for his size. Like he is extremely fool all the time. The family that I bought him from could have been over feeding? But he also pants a-lot, like he is exhausted or dehydrated. I am getting a little worried about his panting could be a reaction from the bloating, or maybe worms? I honestly don't know, help.

Very commonly worm infestation (gastrointestinal parasites) can affect puppies and cause the signs you are describing. Abdominal swelling is caused by the presence of the parasites, which can also cause malabsorption of nutrients, discomfort and possibly dehydration, especially if you notice soft feces/diarrhoea.
A picture of him would definitively help to determine more specifically the underlying problem, but generally speaking a check up would be required for parasite treatment.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This is a very unusual presentation and it is hard to determine if the swelling is due to bladder enlargement, large colon, hernia, abscess or swelling from trauma.
If your puppy is trying to go to the toilet but is unable to, he should be seen by your local vets or emergency service right away. Even if your puppy is acting normal and is not bothered by the swelling I would suggest seeing your local vets today to establish what causes the swelling and to start treatment as soon as possible.

Have her examined by your veterinarian to diagnose serious infection or fluid in her abdomen.. Submit a stool sample to diagnose intestinal parasites. This is a common cause of a swollen abdomen in puppies. She may need to be dewormed several times over the next 8 weeks to clear any parasites.

My 7-week-old puppy's belly is extended but he seems fine. Why?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Enlarged, hard belly often results from eating too much and too quickly. In this case, the belly all of the sudden gets big, about 20-40 minutes after eating. As long as your Ziggy is comfortable, not crying and his energy level is normal you just need to monitor him at home. The mild bloat should get better in 4-6 hrs time. Chronic abdominal distention in puppies in most cases is related to gastrointestinal worms. If Ziggy has not been de-wormed yet, please do it as soon as possible. You can buy worming medications at the vets but also in pet shops and online - you can get them over-the-counter.

Why is my 8-week pug puppy's stomach big and making him slow?

A large belly in a puppy is typically going to be caused by either a severe intestinal parasite problem or an underlying congenital heart defect which is causing ascites. These are two very different diagnoses, therefore you will have to get Nikko examined b your vet to determine which is likely the cause. I do hope that he just has a large parasite (worm) load which can be easily treated for. Best of luck and take care.

My 3-month-old puppy has a pot belly and is thin. What to do?

Hi, Puppies can have what we call a "pot belly". In many puppies the pot belly appearance noticeable after a meal but it will decrease in size after a couple of hours. In cases where the pot belly persist in puppies and does not decrease in size we consider the most common cause is heavy worm infestation which will require to have your puppy to have a series of de-worming treatment at 2 weeks intervals at least twice (with heavy infestation I will recommend more than twice). Other cause of distended abdomen is fluid built up (ascites) which warrant a veterinary investigation. I would suggest to start immediately with treatment using a de-wormer recommended by your vet. My new Yorkie puppy has a big belly and breathes fast. Is he okay?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It isn't unusual for puppies this young to have a big belly after eating. I would make the meals smaller and feed him more frequently. You are also correct that he likely has intestinal parasites, deworming him will help but it will take time. If his stomach enlarges enough it can put pressure on the diaphragm and change breathing patterns. That's why I would feed small meals frequently for a while. Otherwise puppies do breath faster than adults, especially when sleeping. Since he is otherwise doing well I would just watch him closely and follow your vet's vaccination and deworming schedule. My 3-week-old puppy has a bloated belly but good energy. What's wrong?

If her breathing is normal and gums are normal pink, then there is a good chance this is just a worm overload. Sometimes it takes 2 treatments done 2 weeks apart to get rid of worms in young puppies. Ascites would almost always cause a pet to be lethargic and act ill. As long as her energy is good and everything else is fine, it is ok to monitor her for now and have your vet check her for parasites when they get back out of town. If she seems ill at any point, then its best to take her to another local vet for a check up. Best of luck with your young puppy Lady Jane moving forward. Take care. : )

My puppy's tummy gets big and wobbly after eating. Is this normal?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Ozzy is so cute! One thing that comes to mind right away is if any dewormings have been performed. Puppies get infected with intestinal parasites from their mother before birth and while nursing. Deworming of puppies should be done as early as 2 weeks of age and should be done every 3 weeks for at least 3-4 dewormings. This is usually why puppies have pot bellies. I hope this helps.
