My new Yorkie puppy has a big belly and breathes fast. Is he okay?

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 10 days old | 4 lbs

I just got a new yorkie and his belly is expanded. He has a shortness of breath as well. He is playing and sleeping just fine but he still has a shortness of breath. I have a feeling his previous owners have fed him too much food as he just started to transition to dry food or he still has worms inside of him as his deworming process is not fully complete. It's been a couple hours since his last meal, but it has not went down yet. He is very happy and energetic though.

It isn't unusual for puppies this young to have a big belly after eating. I would make the meals smaller and feed him more frequently. You are also correct that he likely has intestinal parasites, deworming him will help but it will take time. If his stomach enlarges enough it can put pressure on the diaphragm and change breathing patterns. That's why I would feed small meals frequently for a while. Otherwise puppies do breath faster than adults, especially when sleeping. Since he is otherwise doing well I would just watch him closely and follow your vet's vaccination and deworming schedule.

It depends on how much you are feeding him. I would use the back of the food bag you have for a rough guideline on how much you are feeding him. For a pet that is 3 lbs at 9 months of age, he likely is a tea cup yorkie, so roughly 1/4 cup of food twice daily or even less is his recommended amount. A good rule of thumb, is that if he is leaving any food in the food bowl, then he likely needs to be offered a little bit less food.
Also, if he has loose stool or not solid stool, you may want to have his feces checked for intestinal parasites, which can cause his belly to be overly distended all the time.
However, if his stool are normal, it is more likely that since he is so small, his stomach is just likely more noticeable, so it appears like he is bloated right after he eats, then when the stomach empties, it goes back to normal.

It could be that Mighty is suffering from intestinal worms which are common in puppies and would give a bloated appearance to the stomach. I would give him a deworming treatment now, and another in two weeks to kill all the worms. He should then be dewormed monthly until he is six months of age, and should be dewormed every three months thereafter. As for breathing quickly when trying to sleep, this can be normal and I wouldn't be concerned about it unless he's breathing quickly all the time. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

My puppy ate super fast. Is his stomach bloated, and is he okay?

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. It is pretty typical for puppies abdomens to look distended after eating whether they eat fast or not. It is more to do with the amount they are eating more than than the speed. Puppies abdomens can also be distended due to worms. If he has not been dewormed that should be done as soon as possible. Puppies should be dewormed every 3-4 weeks until they are 4 months old, then once monthly. That being said, eating fast is not good for them for other reasons. They can swallow a bunch of air which can cause bloat. So, I recommend you either feed him smaller, more frequent meals or get him a special bowl that will slow down his eating (see link). My 7-week-old puppy's belly is extended but he seems fine. Why?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Enlarged, hard belly often results from eating too much and too quickly. In this case, the belly all of the sudden gets big, about 20-40 minutes after eating. As long as your Ziggy is comfortable, not crying and his energy level is normal you just need to monitor him at home. The mild bloat should get better in 4-6 hrs time. Chronic abdominal distention in puppies in most cases is related to gastrointestinal worms. If Ziggy has not been de-wormed yet, please do it as soon as possible. You can buy worming medications at the vets but also in pet shops and online - you can get them over-the-counter.

My puppy's tummy gets big and wobbly after eating. Is this normal?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Ozzy is so cute! One thing that comes to mind right away is if any dewormings have been performed. Puppies get infected with intestinal parasites from their mother before birth and while nursing. Deworming of puppies should be done as early as 2 weeks of age and should be done every 3 weeks for at least 3-4 dewormings. This is usually why puppies have pot bellies. I hope this helps. Is my puppy's belly big after milk replacer normal or concerning?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is likely normal but I would feed less formula at each feeding and increase the frequency or number of feedings. That way he is getting smaller amounts and his stomach won't get so distended. Be sure to contact your Vet for a deworming protocol soon. I also suggest weaning bottle fed puppies sooner due to the constipation or diarrhea affects of formula. Have a good day!

My puppy is weak, breathing fast, and bloated. Should I worry?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Mama! She is super cute! I would take Mama to an Emergency hospital and have her looked at as soon as you can. Anytime there is concern for breathing it could be life threatening, especially if she is also weak. Puppies can suffer from low blood sugar which can make them weak. The fast breathing could be from a fever, pneumonia, or pain. The distended belly may or may not be related. She could just have worms. The best thing for Mama is to have a Vet do an exam. My 8-week puppy is bloated, sleeps a lot, and breathes fast. Should I worry?

8 weeks is the time for a first puppy exam and having the first course of puppy vaccinations. Looking a bit bloated is a possible sign or intestinal parasites (all puppies have them) and therefore it is also time to worm your puppy. When you take him to your vet for first shots, he will worm the puppy as well.
