How many times can a dog get pregnant safely? What are the risks?

I would recommend not breeding her anymore and getting her spayed. It is possible that she is unable to get pregnant again. If you would like to know for sure I would take her to a veterinarian for bloodwork to check her hormone level. However with her getting older it might be time to retire her and stop trying to breed her.

If the dog is in good physical condition, being pregnant again after 6 months should not pose a health risk. However, unless you intend to breed her so intensively you should consider having her spayed. If you do not want those puppies, it is possible to spay early in pregnancy without too much risk. If you intend to let her have the puppies, start now looking for homes for them.

Mating might be difficult for her as she will have to stand on 3 legs and support the weight of a male on top of her. There will not likely be any changes or hardships during the birthing process, but the extra weight of a pregnancy can be harder on her front leg to support. While 6 is not old for small breed dog it is getting towards the end of healthy breeding though. I would not likely breed her due to these circumstances and have her spayed to prevent any future infections and risk

At her age, she should no longer be having puppies. It is to much of a strain on an older dog. That does not mean, however, that she couldn't get bred by a male! I would consider having her spayed for safety as well as her general health.

It's definitely not too late to get her spayed, getting her spayed will reduce the risk of breast cancer significantly, the procedure is safe and with minimal risk, i would recommend having it done soon.

A dog that has never been bred before who is an older dog such as yours might have problems whelping due to the pelvic bones losing their elasticity making for a very hard labor. Your dog may need a c-section to deliver. I would be prepared for this in advance. In addition, I would consider having her spayed at the time of c section (if she has a c section) because pregnancy is hard on older dogs, and I would not recommend her having another litter after this one. There is a higher chance than normal for a difficult delivery due to her age, and there some signs to look out for, such as a foul smelling discharge during labor, strong steady contractions for over an hour without any puppies being produced, the mother is very tired and/or vomiting during labor. I would suggest speaking to your vet about additional signs to look out for labor, and having your vet examine Cookie to make sure she is healthy during this pregnancy.
