Why does my dog always prefer his crate over lying on the carpet?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Dog behavior is very complex sometimes and does not always make sense. Dogs dig for various reasons including digging at the ground and circling before lying down, as though they're trying to make a softer resting place (many dogs do this on the carpet or furniture as well.) Dogs also dig when trying to get warm or stay cool, to entertain themselves, to bury valued items, and when hunting ground-dwelling animals. Oftentimes we see our pets do things that seem odd and there isn't a good answer for their behavior. I'm not really sure in this case why Chacha is doing this but I wouldn't worry about it too much unless you start to notice other odd behaviors or signs that something is wrong with her medically. Your pet may be crawling on his stomach to stretch his belly out, or he could be doing it to try to itchy his belly. If the skin seems irritated at all, like red or has hair loss, Mr. Brown Oreo may have itchy skin on his stomach that he is trying to relieve. If his skin is normal and he is otherwise acting normally, I would not be concerned. I hope this is helpful!

I think it's great that Rocky wants to hang out in his crate! This means that his crate is a safe space and that he is comfortable there. It is a little controversial to use the crate for punishment since it could make Rocky anxious when he needs to be confined in the crate for other reasons, but if he goes in voluntarily it's a good sign that he doesn't have a negative association with his crate.

Dogs sweat by panting, through exchange in their paws, and through exchange in their armpits and inguinal area. It may also be she likes the vibration and noise when the air is on. As long as shes eating, drinking, playing hard, sleeping hard, and not vomiting or having diarrhea, she should be good. This may seem like an odd behavior but I bet it is just comforting to her. If the crate training isn't working, you may need to switch to using a room such as a gated off kitchen or laundry room to see if it stops the problem. If that's the case, Belle may have some aversion to the crate itself, causing her to stress and defecate and then lay in it. Taking her out every 1-2 hours, if possible may also help if she still can't hold it long enough. As for eating it, products such as For-bid can be added to the food to make her stools less palatable. Speaking with a local trainer or veterinary behaviorist if she checked out healthy and is still having issues may also help.

It sounds like Booker is experiencing some separation anxiety when you leave the house. I recommend crating him when you are gone. The crate will provide him a small space where he can feel safe in it when you are gone. You will have to slowly train him to get used to a crate. Start putting him in it when you are home and sitting nearby so he doesn't think you are abandoning him, and slowly increase the time he is in it. He can have toys in the crate, and puzzle toys with treats in it that he has to figure out how to get the treats out. You can put a tablespoon of peanut butter in a Kong toy and freeze it in the freezer overnight, then give it to him in the crate. That will keep him occupied for a while. Finally, you can get a pheromone diffuser called DAP that helps dogs with anxiety and pair that will a DAP pheromone collar that releases pheromones when in contact with his skin. If these methods do not help him, then I recommend having him seen by a vet to discuss the use of anti-anxiety medications. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

Its very possible that Harlie likes the way something on the carpet smells or tastes, so she is continually licking and biting at it in order to keep on tasting it. I would be careful to make sure that she isn't actually ripping out any of the carpet and trying to swallow it. A significant amount of carpet that is eaten and swallowed can result in some severe gastrointestinal issues. I would consider washing or shampooing the carpet in an attempt to see if this stops Harlie from continuing this behavior. You should also make sure that she has enough toys and other chew-things to play with as a deterrent. I would also consider using something like a bitter apple spray on the parts of the carpet she seems to like the most. Some dogs hate the smell and taste of that stuff and will shy away from everything if this is the case. Hope this helps.
