My puppy was constipated. Will he poop normally after an enema?

It's not been 2 days yet, I wouldn't be too worried yet, after an enema a dog can go without pooping for 2-3 days and it is considered normal, as the enema has emptied all his intestines. If he is eating and overall himself- continue monitoring him.

Hello. Wow, you really have your hands full, but all I can say is thank you for caring so much. As for this pup, if it is nursing, I would not be too concerned. The time to administer a enema is if the pup seems really uncomfortable. You can use 2-3 mls of warm water as needed. Were you supplementing the first week & now the puppies are nursing well from mom? If so, they may be just needing to adjust. Try to do as much stimulation as you can. Make sure the puppies have excellent footing as the more they move the more this will help to stimulate a BM. I like something like fake sheepskin. If it was a plastic tube form baby enema and he ate the tube, it may cause serious gastrointestinal problems, but if it was a disolvable for, he should be fine other that the fact that he might have some diarrhea in the next 24 hours.

If Buzz has not had a bowel movement in 3 days, this is likely because his intestines are still normalizing stool and developing a healthy stool after the diarrhea. It can take time for stool to return to normal after having diarrhea. Up to 5 days is typically the average I see before normal stool resumes after multiple episodes of diarrhea. If he is not actively trying to defecate with nothing coming out, it is likely that is is not constipated and just needs more time for the stool to be re-established. You can try and add pumpkin (canned) to the diet and see if this helps establish normal bowel movements. I would add 2tbsp of canned pumpkin to each meal. I hope this helps! Poor guy. He may be a bit constipated. If he is squatting but no feces are coming out, then its best to take him to your vet to have him checked. He may need an enema to remove dried stuck feces in his colon so that he can freely go. You can also give an over the counter enema (from your local pharmacy) if you are up for it. Make sure he has free access to water and give him some canned food as well to increase his water intake. Constipation in young dogs is also often caused by intestinal parasites, so its good to have his stool checked by the vet as well. I hope that your fur baby feels better and is able to go potty soon! She may have gas and fluid left from the enema. Since you already had an exam and X-rays to make sure there was no obstruction and if she's feeling better and eating then you can watch her today. I'd take her for a walk and feed several smaller meals to get her intestinal tract back to normal. If she's still not well then I would take her in for a recheck. A baby enema is not a good idea, it will most likely do nothing. Constipation can be a very serious condition, it can be caused by a physical blockage (foreign body like a bone) or a functional peristalsis deficiency of the intestines. In order to treat simple constipation, you should increase the fibers in the food (e.g. canned pumpkin) and can add a little mineral oil to the diet. I strongly advise taking your dog to the vet in order to check if there is a serious condition causing the constipation first.
