Why does my dog poop during bath time? Is it fear or stress?

That is normal. Think about a skunk. Whey they are scared they spray anal fluid which smells awful. Dogs are similar. When scared or injured they often involuntarily express the anal fluid, and sometimes poop also. When the anal sacs get over full and infected it becomes a problem. Poor little guy! This could be a scary event for him, but I can't think of anything you are going to be able to do to help him emotionally. If he has any loose stool or diarrhea that can cause him to have accidents in the house, and this needs to be addressed by your veterinarian. Otherwise just give him time and he should get over being afraid. Definitely don't punish him as that will just make him more anxious and afraid.

The anal glands have openings on the inside of the rectum. Every time your dog poops, some of the anal sac content is applied to the poop. This is your dog's business card. so to speak. This is how he leaves a scent behind telling other dogs that he was around. It is likely that there still was some excessive anal gland secretion from the scare-episode and likely there is more anal gland secretion on the poop than usual. So the next poop will likely smell less. This is a normal physical event and not sign of an illness.

Poor girl! Yes, this could be stress from the thunderstorms. Fireworks and loud noises can be really scary for dogs. One important thing to do to when your dog acts scared is not to reassure her. We think we are comforting her when we do that, but it's actually reinforcing the behavior and telling her it's ok to be scared. I recommend getting her a thundershirt to wear when there are fireworks or loud noises. These have been reported to help dogs with anxiety. At home, you can put her in a dark quiet room by herself to self-soothe. You can also turn on the TV or music to block out the sound. Finally, you can consider get a pheromone diffuser called DAP that helps dogs with anxiety.

Since it sounds like this is a recent behavior change, the first step would be to have Stain examined by a vet to see if there may be a medical reason that he is pooping in strange places - there are many illnesses that can cause dogs to suddenly begin having house-training accidents, so your vet may recommend doing a fecal exam and possibly some blood work to check for any problems. If everything comes back normal, then this behavior may be a result of stress or anxiety, or some recent change in his routine. In that case, I would recommend going back to basics with house-training for the next few weeks to help get things back on track - take him out frequently, and go for long walks if needed so that he has plenty of opportunity to poop outside. When he does, reward with a treat. In the house, supervise closely to prevent accidents and use a crate if needed to confine him at night or when you aren't able to watch him. Once he has gone a few weeks without any accidents, you can gradually transition back to his normal routine.

I'm sorry to hear that you're having this problem with Soska. This is a common issue for dogs who have been punished for having housetraining accidents - they become afraid to pee or poop in front of the owner, which then makes it extremely difficult to teach them where to go. I would recommend going back to basics with Soska and starting over with her housetraining as if she were a puppy. This means taking her out frequently for potty breaks, and rewarding with praise and a treat as soon as she poops outside. Inside, she needs to be supervised at all times to prevent any opportunity for accidents. You may need to be very patient at first, since if she is afraid to "go" in front of you, it will take her a long time to trust you again.
