My dog has pododermatitis on all paws. Is struggling to walk normal?

The fact that more than one toe is effected makes me more concerned that this is more than just a bacterial infection. While it is possible that bacteria are the primary problem, multiple toes being effected is concerning for a type of cancer or autoimmune condition. I recommend to have Coco examined by the veterinarian. The veterinarian may not be able to tell what this cause is by just a physical exam. They may try a round of antibiotics and monitor a response the therapy. If the lesions persist, biopsy is the next step. Not being able to walk is a sign that Coco is hurting. The vet can also provide medications to make him feel better. Best of luck.

If pododermatitis is related to an environmental allergy, wiping the feet with a washcloth every time your pet comes in from going outdoors can help limit exposure to allergens. I also sometimes recommend soaking the feet in warm water with some Epsom salts. Many times antibiotics or antifungals are necessary so if Buster's feet are very red or painful or if you notice sores you should see your veterinarian.

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! I think you might have meant to attach a picture, it not that would help! Bacterial and yeast infections are common causes of pododermatitis (infections of the feet). They can even be present together. You can try soaking her feet in Epsom salts or use a medicated shampoo on her feet three times per week and leave the lather on for 10 mins before rinsing. This is likely to be due to an infective pododermatitis. It is possible that the generalized infection is actually due to an underlying predisposing allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). It would be hard to say what the cause is without having a sample of the affected area taken. Your vet can do this and have it cultured to determine if it is yeast or bacterial in cause which can provide a more targeted treatment. In the meantime, keeping the paws clean and dry is the best course of action as this can help minimize yeast and bacterial growth, especially between the toes where they thrive on moisture. Placing an Elizabethan (cone) collar on Val can also help keep her from licking which can introduce more moisture and bacteria.

Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Poor Archie seems to have a case of pododermatitis, an inflammatory condition sometimes associated with allergies. It may, indeed take a few days for the antibiotics to kick in. Hopefully, he is on an oral antibiotic, but I will also recommend a topical one, as well. This would involve bandaging up the foot so the antibiotic does its job. You can talk to your vet about some pain medication too. In the meantime, soak the foot in warm water & dilute betadine or 2% chlorhexidine. 1/4 cup of the solution in a cup of water should do it. Try to soak the paw for 5-10 minutes 3 times a day, rinse & dry the foot. This will help in the healing process. Hope Archie is doing better soon. Take care.

That is likely to be due to an infective pododermatitis that possibly could have an allergic base. It is basically a localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection can eventually be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching.
