Why does my golden have a growing pink muzzle bump and eye gunk?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Biff. Skin growths/masses typically fall into a few categories. Raised growths can be tumors (benign or malignant), granulomas (a collection of inflammatory cells), and some assorted epidermal growths. If this lesion persists, enlarges, changes in any way other than shrinking, I would have your veterinarian evaluate Biff. They can get a history and do an examination of the area in question. They may advise some diagnostics (fine needle aspirate, biopsy) to determine what it is or may just advise removing it (excising it) and submitting the growth to a pathologist so they can determine what it is. Some skin growths shrink and resolve over time so if it persists, enlarges, starts to bleed, looks different, again I would have your vet check it out right away. From a clinical standpoint, it looks like a benign growth but I have learned over the years that you never know until you do some diagnostics. It could be hives, an infection, or some type of mass. Your vet could prescribe an antibiotic and an anti-histamine to see if that helps. If not, the lumps should be aspirated and the sample can be submitted to a lab for evaluation. Once diagnosed, your vet can determine the best way to treat the problem.

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor Daisy! From your picture, it appears as though Daisy's eye lid is swollen in corner (by her nose). This can be from an infection or an allergic reaction. If she is squinting her eye, keeping it closed, rubbing it, the eye is producing green-yellow discharge I recommend she be seen today. If not make an appointment to have her seen Monday. Hello there! This is most likely a benign lump called a histiocytoma, which is a common condition that shows up on the face and paws in young dogs. This can only be confirmed by a veterinarian, by considering the size, shape, location, and the age of your dog, it's the most likely cause. I recommend a visit to your vet so that they may offer a definitive diagnosis. They will give Nikki a full exam, and most likely they will obtain a small sample of the cells inside the mass with a small needle. This is called a fine needle aspirate, or FNA. These cells will be examined under a microscope so that the vet can rule out other, more dangerous tumors. Histiocytomas most often spontaneously resolve on their own, but it can take weeks or months to go away completely. Some owners prefer to have them surgically removed, which is usually curative. If Nikki starts scratching at the lump, or if it becomes irritated or starts oozing, a visit to the vet is definitely in order as it could cause an infection. That are certainly weird looking! Depending on when those lesions started and if they seem to be itchy, my presumptive diagnosis might differ considerably. It is possible that Cami might have been sticking in muzzle in an area that she shouldn't have been, resulting in some sort of irritation, and the lesions you currently see. They do definitely appear to be red, inflamed, and possibly infected based on the picture. Another possibility is that there is an immune-mediated condition that could be the cause of this. There is a disease known as Pemphigus that is known to cause skin lesions near the nose. I would definitely take Cami into the vet to have these areas assessed, and have some preliminary diagnostics run on the affected portions of the skin. Hope this helps!

A lesion like that could be several things including an ingrown hair, allergies, skin mites, bacterial infection or a skin tumor/mass. There are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing her diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. You can wash the lesion once a day (not her whole body, just the lesion). Also protect the area from trauma by having your pup wear an elizabethan collar at all times. If the lesion does not start improving within a week or if it is getting worse, have her examined by the veterinarian. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

I would recommend monitoring it for now and if it worsens, becomes much larger or does not go away, I would recommend having the veterinarian recheck Maisy so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. You can apply a spray such as Malacetic conditioning spray to the area, which can be found online and do this twice daily until it resolves. I hope this helps!
