My dog humped a toy and had a little pink blood. Is this normal?

Pip may be causing trauma to his penis or prepuce by being too aggressive about humping. To avoid future trauma do not allow him to have the bear. He may need an examination by a veterinarian to ensure he has not caused excessive damage to himself or to ensure he does not need pain medication or antibiotics. At minimum please make sure he can urinate normally and does not lick around his prepuce or penis. If he is having any issues or the bleeding persists he will need to see a veterinarian. Your dog very likely has some kind of urinary tract infection or he could be injuring the delicate tissue of his penis as he humps the pillow. First, I would get him checked by your vet for an infection of some kind. If he checks out healthy, or to curb this behavior in the future to avoid further injury, when you see him humping the pillow, distract him with a toy or by asking him to perform a trick or task for you, to offer him a pleasant alternative to the pillow. Over time, he may come to abandon the pillow.

It would not be typical to see bleeding from the penis following a neuter surgery. I would actually worry that Henry might have a wound on his penis or even a urethral prolapse. If you see any more blood I would recommend seeing an emergency veterinarian. Either of these problems could get worse if not treated promptly.

It's a little difficult to tell for sure, but I wonder if Charlie had a persistent penile frenulum. It is a band of tissue that runs along the underside of the penis and attaches near the tip of the penis. That will cause the penis to curve. Normally we recommend surgically cutting the frenulum. I have not had one rupture on its own. They do not typically reattach after surgically cutting them. I would recommend having your veterinarian examine it to make sure that it was a persistent penile frenulum and see if anything else needs to be done about it. In the meantime, I would recommend trying to keep Charlie from licking at it and prevent any humping. If you are unable to stop the bleeding, then he may need to be examined tonight. Good luck! Have Cholo rechecked by your veterinarian. Abdominal x-rays or ultrasound should be done to check for more bits of toy in his GI tract. More importantly, an x-ray may show bladder or kidney stones. Blood work and a urinalysis should also be submitted to assess major organ function and to rule out urinary tract infection.

Puppies are teething from 3 to 6 months of age, so It's common to see traces of blood on toys and chew items during this time. As long as Nala Jai is acting normal otherwise, this is likely normal and not a cause for concern :) If you're worried, you can always take her in to your vet for a quick check-up to make sure that nothing else is wrong.
