My dog was near pine caterpillars. What are the signs and timing?

The "spikes" of the caterpillar may cause irritation in and around the mouth. Monitor for redness, swelling, pawing, licking or drooling. You may see some stomach upset (vomiting or diarrhea) if one is ingested. One is likely not enough to cause serious toxicity if eaten.

While pine processionary caterpillars can affect dogs, a person with skin lesions would not be able to pass the irritation on to a dog. The caterpillar's hairs are what cause the rash and other symptoms so your dog would need to be in direct contact with the caterpillar to develop symptoms.

If you do see vomiting, you can try withholding food for 12-24 hours, then feeding a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, she refuses to eat the bland diet, you see blood in her feces or vomit, she has diarrhea, and/or she becomes very lethargic, then I would rush her into a vet. Actually the salivating would signify nausea, possibly a reaction to the pine needles, and the gagging as well. Take your dog off all food until tomorrow. Make sure he has fresh water available. If he is better tomorrow morning do the following: Put Ren on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the vomiting or if the vomiting increases, or if your dog gets lethargic, or is not better in the morning, he needs to see a veterinarian/PetER for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.

The symptoms of obstruction include vomiting, poor appetite, abdominal pain, lack of stools. The signs usually start within 24-48 hrs. If Nene chewed the pits, there is a small chance of cyanide intoxication. The signs to look for are panting, red gums, disorientation. They normally start a few hours after toxin ingestion. However, if Nene ate only two pits, he will likely pass them in his stools and he will not show any worrying symptoms.

This lichen is likely fungus, and while most types of fungi are mildly or non toxic, there are some kinds that can cause severe symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite, and abdominal pain. You could take her into a vet now to have vomiting induced with a shot to get the lichen out of her stomach and take away any risk of toxicity. You can also choose to monitor her over the next 24-48 hours, and if you see any of the symptoms I mentioned above, take her into a vet immediately for treatment. I hope this helps!
