My dog's penis looks strange or swollen. When should I see a vet?

I'm very concerned by the appearance of it, especially the purplish bruised area. It looks very swollen, and in my opinion he needs veterinary care now. It is hard to say for sure from the blurry photo but it appears as though the tip of the penis is stuck out of the prepuce. It looks as though Oliver has paraphimosis (inability to completely retract the penis into the prepuce) and this can be caused by a number of things. I would suggest getting it checked out. If the penis itself is swollen vs. the skin around it, then this can be a severe emergency as a swollen penis for more than 4 hours can result in loss of the penis. Good luck with Tonza!

If his penis is swollen and sticking out, I would be concerned that the swelling could potentially constrict his urethra, leading to difficulty urinating. Because he's having trouble walking and his penis is swollen, I recommend you taking him into your vet to have the paraphimosis resolved. It's important to have him seen now, as it's causing him difficulty walking and you don't want it to lead to a constriction of the urethra.

Unfortunately from the picture you have provided it looks like Patches has developed PARAPHIMOSIS. This occurs when the glans penis extrudes from the prepuce and over a period of time the swelling caused by irritation, drying out and contact with environmental factors causes the penis to swell to a size which prevents it returning into the prepuce. Due to the change in color I am concerned about blood blow and the safety of the tissues. I would take Patches to the veterinarian immediately for medical intervention. The vet will make Patches for comfortable by eliciting pain relief. The veterinarian team will then attempt several approaches to safely return the penis to the prepuce. This can include lubrication and careful manipulation. The use of medications to reduce the swelling may also be used. Occasionally a small surgical procedure is required to correct the problem. This is not something that should wait until tomorrow and should likely be dealt with this evening at an emergency facility. The foul odor you are smelling is not the penis itself, but the infection and toxins that are being released from it. The vet is going to have to investigate what has happened, in terms of an underlying cause for the swelling and necrosis. As for cancer, it is impossible to know this without diagnostic testing from a veterinarian. Cancer of the genital organs in a young dog would be somewhat uncommon but not impossible.
