My dog's penis is stuck out, purple, and bleeding. Is it an emergency?

When the penis is stuck outside the prepuce comma such as what is going on in the photo of Bubba, it is a condition known as paraphimosis. If the penis becomes discolored and white, this usually indicates that the circulation to the penis has been compromised. When the penis gets stuck outside the prepuce, the prepuce can act as a tourniquet and cut off circulation to the penis itself. It is common for the penis to be exposed when a male is humping, but if it becomes too enlarged, they can have a problem with the penis not being able to slide back in the prepuce (the skin covering the penis). This is called paraphymosis. It can be a significant problem and can result in damage to the penis and pain. The is not an infection, that is an emergency however. The penis must be returned to the protection of the prepuce or will eventually die off and require amputation. I recommend getting to an ER hospital tonight. In terms of at home remedies, you can try sterile lube and table sugar to try and reduce things.
