My dog licked an ear infection. Is his penile discharge yeast?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Sam! His ears do look infected and painful. It is best to have him seen by a Vet. You can’t tell if it is a yeast or bacterial infection by looking at it. The vet will use a Q-tip to remove some discharge to smear on a slide. Under the microscope they can then tell. They will then prescribe an ear flush, ear drops and likely steroids for the redness and pain. I hope this helps and I wish Sam a speedy recovery!!

If it is the brown stuff I am seeing in the picture, it could be a small yeast infection (that is consistent with the smell you describe as well). Trim the hairs around the penis and then I would just try 25% white vinegar 75% water solution on a cloth and gently clean twice daily. If the discharge is white/creamy, yellow tinged, or even a bit crusty, that can be normal - especially for an in tact male dog. If there is problems urinating, blood in the urine or blood in the discharge, or very large amounts of the discharge, then I am more concerned. Unfortunately we are not legally allowed to recommend specific drugs/doses without a physical exam (also I have no idea what's available near you), so you'd have to call or visit the vet in that instance. Usually penile discharge is due to an infection of the penile tissue itself known as balanitis. His constant licking will be leading to more inflammation. Your vet should be able to treat this easily with antibiotics and it would be good to have him wear a cone to stop the licking whilst it heals.

The increased sodium while he was sick was likely due to dehydration. It is normal to have a small amount of discharge from the penis in male dogs. Excessive amounts that cause licking or urinary signs is NOT normal and can indicate a prepuce infection or a urinary tract infection. Use mild soap and water to wash the discharge away and see if you can retract the prepuce to see if there is a lot of discharge on his penis. If you see his penis coated in the the discharge that is too much and he should see your Vet. If you do not see any or very little he is likely fine. Good luck!

Hello. The skin irritation is probably from being shaved too close, or possibly even from the shampoo not being completely rinsed from the skin. I would bathe Uno in cool water, no soap & gently dry him. The discharge from his prepuce could be a normal secretion called smegma. It could also be balanoposthitis, inflammation of the glans penis & prepuce with excessive preputial discharge. While mild cases can be self-limiting, more severe cases can lead to abscess formation & scarring. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Are you sure that the bed isn't wet form him licking his penis? If he has an infection of his prepuce or penis he may lick a lot. I would have a Vet examine the skin of the prepuce and see if there is an infection. We treat with antibiotics and prepuce flushing. I hope this helps and I wish Mars the best!

That is likely to be caused by a vaginal and perianal infection (probably secondary to a dermatitis in the perianal region). A check up is required to confirm this clinical suspicion and treat appropriately. Antibiotics and local disinfection with appropriate solution (betadine diluted should be fine) are likely to be needed.
