Why did my dog pee when I visited him after being away for a month?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dutch Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 5 months old

I've left Zeus with my mother for about a month to look after him and when I went to visit him, he smelled my hand, peed by my feet and moved away.. this incident happened twice, why is that? And how to handle it if I'm gonna take him back later?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It sounds like Zeus may be submissively urinating when around you. This may be out of a little uncertainty about who you are or even some fear regarding the interaction on his part. I think with some time and getting used to your presence again, Zeus will return to normal around you. I would suggest having plenty of positive interaction (play, giving treats, etc) to allow him to warm back up to you. Never force any interaction and it is best to allow him to approach you first. Good luck!
